New work inspired by the beautiful yet destructive work of the Japanese beetle, which has spent all summer ‘skeletonizing’ the leaves of the wild grape vines growing between our studio and our neighbours’ fields.

Cast from recycled bottle glass and embedded w copper, I’m excited to install them this week at @tomthomsonartgallery. 🍃✨ there will be a few new works alongside some more familiar things:)

‘cut a path through the weeds and call it a garden’ curation @shannelaine opens Oct 17, with an artist talk from 1:00pm to 2:00pm and reception 2:00pm to 4:00pm by @d_andreabowie

Affordance, 2017, made 9 years ago today!

wild to have this reminder pop up as the second slide is what I’m working on in the studio now, getting some new work together for an exhibition @tomthomsonartgallery in a few weeks. Still at it lol 😊🤗🫠

9 years ago when I made that series, so many changes were happening in my life. Looking back, I can see that I was being transformed by the making of the work just as much as I was making it. Who’s touching who?

It’s a thread that runs through my practice, a deep love and respect for the material I work with (in this instance clay), and for all the ways one may commune with it. There is a conversation, a reciprocity, an exchange that unfolds through touch, time, pressure, resistance, surrender… holding on, letting go.

Getting excited to bring work to the Tom soon! Installing has got to be my fav part of exhibiting 💓 please see previous post for show details 🎯 by @d_andreabowie

Opening October 10, D’Andrea Bowie’s cut a path through the weeds and call it a garden explores our relationship with the land through a process-based sculptural practice. Working with materials drawn from the earth and commonly used to shape the built environment, Bowie considers how these materials transform through both natural and human intervention.

October 10, 2026 – January 2, 2027

Join us on Saturday, October 17 for an Artist Talk from 1:00–2:00 PM, followed by a reception from 2:00–4:00 PM.

Winter Wheat @thegoldfarbgallery completes its cycle this Saturday which is fitting as the local wheat has turned golden and ready for harvest. I’d like to express heartfelt appreciation to all at the GGYU for not only hosting this work so graciously but engaging with the concepts and processes that spurred the exhibition forward. 🌾☀️

And lastly, I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity to work w @michaelmaranda on this show. The term curator has come to mean many things to me over the years and in this case I have come to understand it as a fellow traveller for a time. Thank you for walking alongside me and my work for a bit 🌱

One month left! 🌾 Winter Wheat curated by @michaelmaranda @thegoldfarbgallery comes down July 25, and with local wheat fully grown in the fields and harvest around the corner, I thought to share some of the process w one of the pieces made for the show, Ring of Fire (Make Hay While the Sun Shines).✨

Inspired by a stone mill spotted at Pickering Museum Village, the cut rocks were shipped from overseas in the early 1800s then would have been banded w steel before installed in a flour mill to grind wheat. 🍞🥨🥖🥪

The overall size of the piece is similar to a hay bale, which came from our neighbours’ farm, where they maintain a herd of milking cows. I cast the top of the bale in plaster, using a recycling process that allows me to reuse old moulds. Thx Michael and Christine @studio.lu.yyz for a hand popping the mold off and straw picking! 💪🏼

The hand-built clay sections were made from reclaimed clay, (more fun labour!) To reclaim, I dry out the clay then smash it up before making a slurry. I then screen the clay a few times- it gets tested to make any necessary adjustments. For the finish, I created a glaze from local clay, maple leaf ash, and granite dust saved from stone carving. The clay I’ve found so far in my area isn’t suitable for hand-building, but it makes a decent glaze. I used Alberta Slip to improve its performance. ⚗️oh and a home made oxide wash pre bisque!

While building the blocks, I enjoyed looking at their internal structure and left some open. As I love trying different things, one of the blocks is lidded. All were fired to cone 6 in oxidation. See it in person for all the crunchy, gooey melted goodness! 🫠

Special thx to @yorkuampd for use of the kiln on the bigger blocks:) 🔥 by @d_andreabowie

Appreciation Post! 🤍🩶🖤
Now that ‘Weathered Rock’ has come down, I wanted to share my sincere thanks to the Canadian Clay and Glass team for hosting the exhibition and for all the care taken in handling (my often) heavy sculptures.

Thank you to Peter Flannery for thoughtful curation and an insightful essay, and to former director Denis Longchamps for visiting my studio a few years ago. Thank you as well to current director Sarah Stanners for the warm welcome and encouragement. I’m so looking forward to watching the gallery grow in the upcoming years! ✨

I’m also pleased that ‘Tall Snag’ (ceramic, steel) and a triptych of cast glass pieces will become part of the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery collection.

And! So much appreciation to everyone who visited and engaged with the exhibition 🙏💖🐝💨

We invite you to join us for an artist talk and exhibition walk-through with D’Andrea Bowie on Friday, April 24, from 1 – 2:30 pm at The Goldfarb Gallery.

This program offers an opportunity to engage with the ideas that shape Bowie’s practice, including critical place-making and neo-materialist approaches to land, material, and embodiment. This public tour is presented on the occasion of our current exhibition, D’Andrea Bowie: Winter Wheat, curated by Michael Maranda, assistant curator.

D’Andrea Bowie is an artist and educator based in rural Whitchurch-Stouffville, just outside Toronto. Her work explores the interconnected relationships between land, body, and material through the lenses of race, gender, capitalism, and settler colonialism. She received her MFA from York University in 2023, supported by a SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship and the Susan Crocker and John Hunkin Award in Fine Arts. Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions, as well as community-based initiatives across public, commercial, and alternative spaces. She recently opened a solo exhibition at the Canadian Clay and Glass Museum and currently teaches in the Department of Fine Arts at York University.

The exhibition runs until July 25, 2026. Admission is always free, Tuesday through Saturday, from 12 –5 pm.

Artist talk and exhibition tour, Triangle gallery, @thegoldfarbgallery

A few stories..
First slide: cast glass pieces made from recycled window pane- the same glass you’ll see throughout the gallery, from the tops of the drawers to the glass harp rack.

Second and third slide: ceramic floor pieces created with reclaimed clay, glazed with wild clay slips and rock dust collected from stone carving. The three-panel ceramic piece, in particular, includes Algonquin limestone sourced from the same quarry featured on the gallery’s exterior wall fired to cone 6 in oxidation.

Summer studio selfie:)

Last slide, some much needed green! Neighbouring winter wheat in spring fog.
