This piece didn’t start with a plan. No sketch, no roadmap, just fragments trying to coexist.

The drawing builds itself slowly, through small decisions, through textures, interruptions, and quiet accidents. Sometimes it feels like it shouldn’t work… but it does.

There’s a kind of free association happening here, not with words, but with lines, gestures, and images. I try not to force meaning too early. And then, at some point, something clicks. Or at least… something feels familiar. Like recognizing a memory you didn’t know you had.

Esse desenho não teve planejamento. Nenhum esboço ou roteiro, apenas fragmentos tentando coexistir.

Ele vai se construindo aos poucos, através de pequenas decisões, texturas, interrupções e acidentes silenciosos. Às vezes parece que não deveria funcionar… mas de algum jeito eu acho que funciona.

Existe uma espécie de associação livre aqui, não com palavras, mas com linhas, gestos e imagens. E então, em algum momento, algo se encaixa. Ou pelo menos… algo soa familiar. Como reconhecer uma memória que você não sabia que tinha. by @da.mattta

✨️ Shark Smile is an artwork from 2026 using mixed media on paper. It comes together through the collection of images and memories. It happens through the playful and tactile way drawings sometimes reveals itself.

There is a good amount of free association, similar to the one we do in therapy, that happens here but with hand gestures and image choices. I try no to make to much sense at first, but everytime when I stop to listen, in this case, to see. I hear a story, a feeling, a situation, or even a memory

There will be a *very limited fine art print edition of this piece soon. Follow me to keep an eye (and an ear) out

“Seawall / Quebra-Mar”
Mixed Media on Paper, 2026

This piece brings together organic and graph-like sketches and shapes, not necessarily in opposition, but in dialogue. The image was composed using references from collective archives as well as emotional and personal references, such as the iconic war photograph by Robert Capa.

This drawing is a throwback from two years ago, it was part of my experiment with drawing overlays at the time. It was lost for a while but it suddenly appeared to me the other day, I'll take it. Enough time has passed that I can now look at it with softness rather than criticism.

Last of the three editorial illustrations I did for the essay "Beware the Man Whose Handwriting Sways Like a Reed in the Wind" by the great Anne Carson. This is a personal work.

In this essay, she writes about hands, handwriting, and her relationship with the scriptural disintegration caused by her Parkinson’s disease. It’s a beautiful text—I highly recommend it. It was published in the London Review of Books in March 2025.
