One of the most beautiful aspects of being a @uscg_academy alum is the incredible way relationships are built and maintained. The network we have is one of the strongest in the world, and here’s a testament to that.
.
Yesterday, I met up with Laura Foster (formerly Hutchinson...and can someone tag her for me if she’s on IG?), CO of CGC WILLIAM HART and CGA Class of ‘08. With small Academy class sizes typically under 250 (and me being in the Class of ‘09), I knew who Laura was, but that was about it.
.
So I find out that her cutter is pulling into Hilo. I jumped at the opportunity to reconnect and it was awesome. It was fascinating to hear the amazing #uscg journey she’s been on. She gave me a tour and it brought back so many good memories of my time at sea and in command. .
Laura, thanks for proving to me once again that it is great to be a part of the Coast Guard Academy community. It is one of the greatest institutions that, if nothing else, fosters an incredible bond between alumni. Highlighting the Miloli’i #siren today.
#milolii is a small and probably the most isolated community on the #bigisland, 5 miles from the highway in the South #kona District. Today, I went to the #keaau siren at #shipman park for an operational test with @readyhawaii. As you may be able to see, my site supervisor (aka my 4-year old son) joined me to verify proper operation. If you are familiar with #hawaiiisland, you may wonder why Kea’au has a siren, which is 8 miles from Hilo beaches. There’s no way a #tsunami will reach Kea’au, you might say. And you’re right. But there are two things to remember: 1) sirens aren’t used exclusively for tsunamis anymore. They’re all-hazard outdoor warning sirens. They help notify you of a plethora of imminent natural or man-made disasters, and 2) there could be a catastrophic event occurring in #hilo, or a different community. We had a report of a possible runaway siren in Hawaiian Paradise Park, so I was sent out to investigate. A runaway siren, though very rare, is an accidental activation of a particular siren, possibly due to a technical malfunction.
