At the end of 2024, while visiting MissRead Berlin, a festival of independent publishing, at the incredible Haus der Kulturen der Welt, the idea to create a magazine dedicated to Ukrainian artists appeared. And once it came, there was no stopping it.

And here we are, a year later, invited back to the very same place–this time as part of Forward Festival @forwardfestivals

We are very curious to see what else is in store for us 🔮 taken in Haus der Kulturen der Welt by @dach.magazine

Let's Write Together

The best way to overcome procrastination is simple: sit down and write. Together.

The topic: "The Flying Dog"

"Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No—it's a flying dog!"

Let's step beyond the boundaries of reality and wander into a world where anything can happen. A place that feels like a dream, where the strange becomes ordinary and the impossible suddenly makes perfect sense.

Write a short story, a poem, an experimental piece—or ignore the prompt entirely. What matters most to us is that you write. If you like, you can share what you've written, and we'll publish selected pieces on our website.

Please bring whatever you'd like to write on or with.

ℹ️ This is how it works: If you also plan to visit Indiecon Conference, you can book all the workshops and roundtables with your ticket (starts from 19€).

➡️ If you join us for the fair on Sep 5-6  you can abook single events via our website, just klick the „get me a ticket“ button somewhere and scroll to "Community Program" in our shop. The community program to choose from appears in step 2.

Roundtables are free of Charge but require Registration.

Meeting Point: Roundtable Space

Time: Saturday Sep 4, 6.00-6.45pm

Language: The session and discussion will be held in English, but you're welcome to write in any language.

Finally, we’re launching our book club! And we’re kicking off the season with Mykola Khvylovy “I (Romance)” 📘

A 1924 novella about a protagonist who shoots people in the name of a “greater goal.” An inner conflict between love and moral law and the moment when an idea becomes more important than an individual human life.

▪️The novella is available in English as a PDF in Wikimedia
▪️You can also listen to it as an audiobook on SoundCloud, released by @slovo_pittsburgh
Slovo. Theater group also created a stage adaptation of the novella, which was performed in New York, Illinois, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Washington.
/Information from an article by @lyuk.media /

ℹ️ It’s a short novella, so you can read it before the book club, or simply come to the discussion and read it together with us.

📆September 19
📍 Cultural Workers Studio at Flutgraben e.V. (Am Flutgraben 3, 12435 Berlin)

Participation is free (donations are welcome). Registration is in the comments. If you need the links to the audio or PDF, just let us know in private message or in the comments.

Our first presentation in Poland was warmly welcomed by @cukr.wroclaw team on a hot August 13 🌻

We talked about the different stages of creating the magazine and introduced the authors featured in our first issue.

We read an excerpt from “Da$$a eats” by @dasha__suzdalova in both Ukrainian and English, and presented a translation of a poem by @anna.chasiki , which we began working on during our residency.

At the end of the evening, we held a small translation workshop, working with an excerpt from the wonderful @iuliia.pereguda “Linguistic Poem.” How fascinated we were by difference of the results!

We opened a bottle of champagne and ended the evening with lovely conversations 🥂

Thank you to everyone who joined us. See you at @skovorodafest.pl taken in Wroclaw, Poland by @dach.magazine

Dach Magazine from Berlin is presenting itself in Poland for the first time!

Dach Magazine is an independent English-language publication featuring contemporary Ukrainian prose and poetry alongside art and photography.

The magazine’s editors, Viktoriia Spalek @spalek.v and Richard Pettifer @koala_propaganda , will talk about:

➰ What does it mean to be independent, and how can we promote Ukrainian culture in the EU through our own efforts?
➰How do we select works and present the authors featured in the first issue of the magazine?
➰ The challenges of translation: how do you translate Ukrainian into English while preserving the original feeling and impression?

The evening will also include poetry readings in Ukrainian and English from the first issue, as well as a presentation of the translation work developed during our residency.

If you’re curious about contemporary Ukrainian short prose and poetry, art and photography - and about what contemporary Ukrainian music sounds like — come join us.
Language: Ukrainian/English

🍷Free entry
A chill atmosphere, interesting people, and a pleasant evening surrounded by like-minded people.

The first birthday Dach Magazine on the rooftop!

@yyaryna and @art.guide.berlin baked cakes, @koala_propaganda brought the sparkling wine, @snowgirlwhite welcomed everyone and introduced the guests to each other, and @viktor.the.viktor created the atmosphere with the perfect playlist.

No rush. No stress. No strict schedule. Just good conversations, slow time together, and the joy of meeting new people.

During the celebration, we also shared what to expect from the second issue of DachMagazine and introduced two of our contributors: poet @jenuessska and artist @masha.pryven

Some moments in life you wish you could relive. For us, it was July 24. 🤍 taken in Berlin, Deutschland by @dach.magazine
