my dad was a drummer but he passed a few years back. as a kid i wanted to play with him so badly but i had no musical talent or training so i learned to play the piano as an adult so we could play one day.

i heard this slower version of kirk franklin’s hosanna by @calledoutmusic that i thought was just a nice rendition until i realized how impactful the drums were in the original and clearly missing from this rendition.

its recognizable but it almost turns it into a whole new song. It’s almost like yea he’s gone but i have still managed to find my way without him around.

crazy how grief demands that you make space for it regardless of settings.

some people in the room were attempt survivors and some were loss survivors.

my entire message was how the fight to keep each other here starts way earlier than we think.

i talked about friendship math and how it takes 200 dedicated hours to make a close friend and how that investment is often what keeps us around.

@harlancohen put a name to something we’ve already been practicing. The Law of Rejection.

Which teaches that rejection is a part of the process.

@go_faar says conversations like this should “start early and continue often.”

Put the two together and kids learn to handle disappointment instead of turning to unhealthy outlets like underage drinking.

Back to school is the perfect time to continue these conversations because prevention starts long before there’s a problem.

Spoke at Google on parenting ages 4–11, and one point that got the room thinking. Let these kids see it, how you handle problems and arguments. Then narrate how you handle it. The thing they hear from us is their reality! Just gotta realize the opportunity you have in front of you. @lifeatgoogle Let’s do this again.
