The air in the jungle was thick and heavy, smelling of damp earth and rot, as I stepped into the witch doctor’s hut. He sat shrouded in the blue-grey smoke of burning herbs, his eyes reflecting nothing but the flickering embers between us. “I have what you seek”, he said as he pressed a shriveled, leathery object into my palm—the monkey’s paw, its fingers withered and stiff. “It gives exactly what you ask for,” he murmured, his voice a dry rasp that seemed to vibrate in the very marrow of my bones, “but it never gives what you want.” As I retreated back into the emerald shadows of the trees, the weight of the thing felt less like a lucky charm and more like a cold, heavy anchor pulling me toward a debt I wasn’t yet ready to pay.
