NEW DEVELOPMENTS in the Jefferson High School vs. Maynard Jackson High School controversy.
Following the allegations that surfaced online after the September 11 football game, Jefferson City Schools conducted an extensive investigation into what reportedly happened that night.
According to the findings released by Jefferson City Schools, investigators reviewed footage from 54 stadium cameras, collected more than 50 written statements from students, staff, volunteers and security personnel, and interviewed individuals connected to the incident.
The investigation reportedly found no evidence substantiating claims involving Confederate flags, concession workers spitting in food, a Jefferson football player spitting on a Maynard Jackson player, or racial slurs being directed at Maynard Jackson band members at the locations investigated.
Jefferson officials also said an altercation involving Maynard Jackson band members and an adult occurred as the band was leaving the stadium, but that individual was not affiliated with Jefferson City Schools.
The Georgia High School Association also reviewed the football-game reports and concluded that both football teams demonstrated sportsmanship and respect during the contest. However, APS has emphasized that GHSA does not oversee marching-band activities and says multiple Maynard Jackson band members reported experiencing racial slurs.
So at this point, there are two different accounts of what happened, and the public should be careful about treating social-media claims as established facts.
This situation is far more complicated than what originally circulated online.
