Hey- I’m Dave and I like (and don’t like) to run. I spent a couple decades in the Army and now work for an engineering firm. The kids are just about grown. So my wife and I are getting out and enjoying life more now that we can concentrate on only us. I’m working on running a half in every state. I will actually probably do it twice. Just recently, at the Eugene Half Marathon (Oregon, state 29), at 49 years old, I broke my 12 year old PR and ran 1:41:40. I want to get under 1:40 so bad! I am quickly approaching 50 and have to do things to take care of my body more. I hope that sharing my running journey can help others with theirs, maybe help with motivation, and compare notes on races, training tricks, and other running things of life. I love seeing all of your running posts- so keep posting. Leave a comment and interact and maybe we’ll see each other at the same race someday! #tennesseerunner #50halfsin50states #running #halfmarathontrainingšŸƒšŸ»ā€ā™€ļø#dohardthings taken in Clarksville Tennesse by @dads_who_run

Good progressive run tonight. Started at 8:27 pace and finished at 8:00 flat.

First real run after fighting off a nasty head cold the last few days.

I use to always run based on how I felt. The intensity rarely changed- but I didn’t pay attention to pace, heart rate or anything before or a during a run.

But I found it difficult to consistently get under 1:45 in my half marathon.

Then I up’d the mileage considerably by adding a long slow run to my weekly runs. I had to do these on the treadmill because it’s soooo hard to run slower than you want to.

As someone trying to break 1:40 (which is about 7:38 mile pace), I made my easy runs at 9:03 pace. It’s long- it’s horrible. I would watch a movie or something while running.

But after weeks and weeks of this, my other runs became stronger. And then when I tested it (twice), not only did I greatly improve my total times, but my strength in the last 5k was the strongest it’s ever been.

So do the easy runs. Keep doing the hard ones, the hills, the speed work, but make sure you also prioritize the easy runs. taken in Clarksville, Tennessee by @dads_who_run

Apparently turning 50 doesn’t mean you suddenly know what you’re doing. 🤣 Anyone else trying something new at this age?ā€ taken in Clarksville Tennesse by @dads_who_run

Map is updated! Medal is hung!

31 out of 50 complete. I can’t believe I’ve gotten this far!

Now I’m trying to figure what’s next???

I have a couple repeat state races planned for the rest of 2026 but 2027 is still wide open.

St. Jude Half in Memphis in December for sure.

Probably Anchorage in June…. šŸ˜Ž

Let me me know where the awesome races are- small, repeat state, doesn’t matter- I love a good race.

Let’s goooo!! taken in Clarksville Tennesse by @dads_who_run

We had a great time in New Hampshire. It was a great little getaway that we both needed.

We had to find a Starbucks for Becky- New England has Dunkin EVERYWHERE and not as many Starbucks. But we found a Target to take care of her.

The beach is awesome- even in October!

Spent most of the day Saturday at Lake Winnipesaukee. Waterfalls, lake side restaurants, cozy little shopping.

I couldn’t resist taking this picture! 🤣

The Yum Yum store had all kinds of things to put you in a sugar coma!

An ice cream cone by the lake was perfect.

We walked by the beach every day, even when it was chilly.

The race was awesome.

We played on the beach afterwards.

Celebrating our achievements together is so much fun.

And we aren’t close to being done!

Some new bibs for the collection.

And his and hers bling for the wall.

Treated ourselves to FryDoe on our last night.

ā€œThe round ones are Posersā€ 🤣🤣

And it was worth it. Cinnamon sugar deliciousness!

Becky kicked off her shoes after the race and discovered how cold the Atlantic in New Hampshire in October really is!! taken in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire by @dads_who_run

New Hampshire is COMPLETE! @hamptonrockfest did not disappoint!! 1:45:31 for the official time.

Wheels fell off a little on the back 5k- but we’re going to make that better. Happy to be under 8 minutes per mile average through ten miles.

State #31 is complete and we had an awesome time in the ā€œLive Free or Dieā€ state!

More photos coming tomorrow! taken in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire by @dads_who_run
