✨•1 full year alcohol free•✨

I celebrate yesterday as a way to send love to the girl that I was 5 years ago. Something really sudden and really, really hard happened to her, and it changed a lot of things in her life. The primary thing was that it made her not like herself very much. She thought that she was stained, broken, a bad person, and that everything & everyone would be a lot better off without her around. And then, she found something that was once just for a night out with friends, now became the only thing that could quiet those ever-gnawing thoughts in her head. And from there, it took on a life of its own.

Once alcohol becomes a crutch, there’s really no going back. The longer I tried to deny that fact, the more at war with myself I became. I turned into someone I wasn’t, someone I would never want to be.

But these past two years have changed so many things for me. It wasn’t easy at first, by any means. But I put in a lot of work. Work to heal, to unpack the things that happened to me, to learn that they didn’t make me damaged or a bad person or less than. To learn that my relationship with alcohol turning toxic wasn’t my fault, but it was absolutely my responsibility to do something about it. For my loved ones, for my dream life, and most importantly, for myself.

And while at first there were still some bumps in the road, I can truly say that I’ve spent the past year 100% honoring myself. Reintroducing myself to all of the good and strength and passion and power within me. And wow. I love me. A whole lot in fact. Of course I know I’m farrr from perfect, but I think that in so many ways, I’m really pretty great. I love the me I was 5 years ago and I love the me I am now and I love all the me’s I ever will be. I am smiling brighter, singing louder, laughing harder.

And it’s not that I’m a better person now. It’s that I’m the person that I always have been, and I’m no longer letting alcohol take that away.

Thank you to everyone who has seen me and held my hand and loved me even when I couldn’t. This is just as much for you as it is for me. I’m so grateful for this year. Here’s to the year ahead, and every single one after that.

As each year passes, I become increasingly aware of how rare all of this is. To be alive. To wake up safe and loved, to have homemade cinnamon rolls and mocktails for breakfast while classic Christmas CD’s play on a decades old stereo, to try a new Dim Sum restaurant alongside some of my favorite people with ice cream sundaes for dessert, to put on a dress that my mom wore 30 years ago when she was my age and stand with my tongue out in the years first perfect snowfall, and have my little sister take pictures of me while hyping me up so I’ve never felt prettier. Life is unpredictable and there are really no guarantees, and some of the events of yesterday (both on the very day & historically) really hi-light that frankly heartbreaking and unfair truth. And in holding two truths at once, I am so thankful for birthdays like yesterday that ground me in my current reality- that I treasure this life I’ve been gifted, even when it’s not perfect, even when I’m tired, even when it’s hard. I have such a beautiful life. And I’m lucky to get the chance to have made the most of it this last trip around the sun. I plan to do the same this next one, day by day, present and intentional, with gratitude for each moment that I’m living. Thank you for all the bday love 🩵❄️ by @daelynncj
