There’s something familiar about Ghost Photos, even on the first listen.

Sio and Daev Martian have been making music together for years, and you can hear that understanding in the way this record sits. Daev’s production moves between electronic, hip-hop and jazz, built around warm bass, a bossa groove and the off-centre details that define his sound.

Then there’s Sio. A songwriter first, she has a way of turning memory, love and the more complicated parts of being human into something deeply personal. On Ghost Photos, she looks back at the way we romanticise what’s already gone - old pictures, old feelings and the versions of people we hold onto. Her vocals wash over the production, giving the track its hazy, nostalgic feel.

Together, they’ve made something warm, strange and beautifully understated. Electronic music with hip-hop in its bones, jazz around the edges and plenty of feeling in between.

Join us on Wednesday, 7 October at 4PM at the @goetheinstitut_southafrica Johannesburg for a free @ableton User Group workshop featuring Johannesburg-based producer and artist @daevmartian.

This session is an opportunity to get inside the creative world of one of South Africa’s exciting and eclectic contemporary music makers. Daev will share insights into his approach to music production, creative experimentation, and developing a sound that draws from a wide range of influences.

Expect an inspiring afternoon of ideas, music, production techniques and conversation, whether you're an experienced producer, an Ableton Live enthusiast, or simply curious about the creative process behind electronic and contemporary music.

About Daev Martian
Born Dave Moyo in Johannesburg in 1992, Daev Martian is a producer, artist and DJ whose diverse upbringing in a culturally rich environment fuelled his passion for music from an early age.

His sound is futuristic and eclectic, bringing together influences from jazz, hip hop and electronic music. His discography spans a broad sonic spectrum, from deep house productions to full-on hip hop beats, with plenty of unexpected gems along the way.

Daev's career began with a debut release on California-based independent label Goldie Records, followed by releases on respected platforms including Stay True Sounds, the label co-founded by Kid Fonque and Julian Gomes.

Beyond his solo work, Daev has also played an important role in the formation of award-winning jazz band NLite, contributing to innovative collaborations and projects that continue to shape the contemporary South African music landscape.

With a commitment to musical exploration and a sound that refuses to sit neatly in one box, Daev Martian continues to push boundaries across production, performance and collaboration.
