I've been incredibly fortunate to travel to different countries for jobs and fishing, where I've met remarkable people and explored diverse waterways, catching incredible fish. Unfortunately, I've also witnessed the the reality of how poorly we treat these vital resources—trashed waters, overfishing, algae blooms, dwindling water levels, and more.

I recently traveled to Iceland to witness an incident where thousands of farmed salmon were inadvertently released then moved into wild waters. These farmed fish had already penetrated into the river systems, mixing with the wild fish. Even worst around the spawning season. In response, we took action, removing, euthanizing, and transporting the farmed fish to @nasfund for further genetic and analysis.

Let's all do better. Let's educate ourselves, become more informed, and actively seek ways to contribute positively. Spread awareness and educate others about the pressing issues we face in our local or surrounding waters.

Food dump. I’ve stopped caring about plating nicely. Just enjoy the moment with family and friends. I hope I’m teaching our son Jack, how cooking can be one of life’s greatest skills. I’ve been taking him to @greensborofarmerscurbmarket every Saturday I’m home for three years and as much as I can to @sunsetmarketgardens . It’s one of my favorite things we do. Eat good food. Shop your local farms. Support people really doing the work.
Recent food.
Bo ssam -ish. Fresh poke. Donuts with Jack. Red curry. Big ass burger. Sheet pan kabobs ( must try ). Caviar on chips. Shrimp toast. Aguachile with hamachi. @khoibarbecue inspired spread. Lavash style bread cooked on the back of @yeti then turned into a sajuk wrap ( unreal ). Thai chicken. Gai yang. Caesar chicken thing. Focaccia. @ellasflats with smoked fish and stuff. @bentonsbacon BLT. Mayer salad. Pizza with Jack.

Summer ‘26.
It’s taken 41 years but I’m starting to understand how special each season is. Having a son and watching him grow up has really put the importance of being present. Pairing that with family and good and new friends, it never gets old. Life’s not easy but damn, it’s fun.

Here’s to more exploring, more food, wrong turns, traveling, extra fishing, shooting more film and extra laughs. Thanks to all that made this summer a damn good one. by @dafason

My first order from @bentonsbacon was probably 15 years ago. Around that same time, I remember eating their country ham at Momofuku Ssäm Bar and wondering how the hell something this simple could taste that good.

Ever since, I’d wanted to make it to Madisonville, meet the Benton family and see the operation for myself. It always felt a little out of reach. Fast-forward 15 years and somehow a passion project turned into reality.

Turns out Alan Benton’s son, Darrell, is into carp fly fishing and fishing in general. Even crazier, he’d been reading @southerncultureonthefly around the same time I was discovering Benton’s. Small world. A few messages, a couple date changes, and we finally made it happen.

The hospitality at Benton’s is something you don’t see much anymore. Everyone gets welcomed through the door. Tours seem endless. One minute it’s someone is grabbing scraps for bears, the next it’s a three-Michelin-star chef walking through. Honestly, it’s worth sitting around just to people watch.

Smoke hanging in the air. Salt. Ham. Bacon. Stories. People who genuinely give a damn about what they make and the people who come to see it.

The whole place feels like stepping back into a simpler time in the best possible way.

Keep doing what you’re doing, @bentonsbacon. Places like this are getting harder to find.

You guys are one of a kind.

A fun and quick job back in April with the @hardyfishing team for their Home Waters and Marksman push. I saw my first moose, the most picky dry fly eats and practiced my yoga poses in thorns to get the shot.

A mix of GA645w with E100 and digital.

Words & images from my bud @dafason , “Iceland. Four days of clouds, rain, wind and that flat gray light that makes you wonder if the mountains around you actually exist. Then Iceland gave us one of those days. One perfect day when everything opened up. Glaciers. Volcanoes. Big skies.
Chrisburkard invited me on a mission to chase fish, but like most good trips, the non-fishing parts became the most memorable. Dagur with his Red Hot Chili Peppers sing alongs, what officially qualifies a trout as “mega,” and debates over the best Icelandic candy.
The meals at West Ranga hit every note after long mornings and afternoons outside. The meals where everyone gets quiet for the first few bites. I also may or may not have had nine pieces of the hors d’oeuvres before dinner one night.
Travelling like this always reminds me how unique fly fishing is. A fish gives you a reason to travel halfway around the world, stand in shitty weather, and stare endlessly at water for hours, yet still be stoked. Somehow along the way you end up seeing places you never thought you’d see and meeting people you probably never would have met.
The fish are pretty damn cool too.
Thank you Iceland.”

A special thanks to @west_ranga for hosting us

Do you ever have one of those moments you think it’s a dream but it’s really happening? Well this is one of those moments for me. Gnarly weather, rain, wind, and the type of chill that’s just enough to make you move more.

Our guide, @dagur_fishhunter took a turn knowing I’d love to make a few casts to a big brown in between salmon fishing. He had a spot and kept mentioning the word, MEGA. As an angler we all have our stories. You should have been here yesterday, this one time…, that one year…

My first cast I had a hit that felt like a massive striped bass, but I didn’t sting it. After moving down 20’ and a few more casts I came tight to what felt like a snag, then it moved. Dagur was helping @chrisburkard and after the first turn I saw her. I screamed, BIG fish. Dagur ran over like Usain Bolt with the salmon net and after 5-7 minutes we landed her. I’d never seen a trout like this.

The best part is this was a river fish, a native fish, and an old fish. I’ve always dreamed of catching a brown that I’d be proud to share. Never did I think it would be this.

She taped 84cm, 33”, weighed in mid twenties. For reference I am 6’6”, 225lbs. It’s the first trout I felt looked big in my hands. I’ll never forget this fish.

Thanks to @dagur_fishhunter for being the bad ass person and guide he is. Thanks to @skwalafishing for making me dry and warm. @hardyfishing for my favorite streamer combo, Marksman 9’6” with Averon reel. Thanks to @scientificanglers for the incredible fly lines. @bronzeriverflyco for tying up some leggy bois for me. @chrisburkard for snapping the hero shots. @howlerbros for the good ju-ju hat. Thanks @icelandoutfitters for having us.

Frames 2/3 are my favorites. I had to lay down and laugh as I couldn’t believe it. Thanks Chris for capturing the stoke. 🤙🏼

Thanks Brown Trout. 🫱🏼‍🫲🏽
