Moananuiākea fins will be available online from @dafinhi Friday, July 31 at 8am.

From Kualoa to Moʻorea, from Mangaia to Tāwhiti Rahi, from Waikīkī to Keaukaha, water people of Moananuiākea know the drill: get some DaFiNs and keep them close. The best tools for staying safe in the kai, DaFiNs are used by Hawaiʻi’s lead ocean athletes, lifeguards, and waʻa folks. Our lucky stars aligned and we were able to bring this design back in black.

Over thousands of years of island life and an untold number of voyages, the peoples of Moananuiākea have been building a database of knowledge on stars, clouds, winds, birds, currents, waves, weather and more. It’s the brilliant hoʻoilina (legacy) of kūpuna like Hawai’iloa, Makali’i, Mō’īkeha, Kamahualele, Kila, La’amaikahiki, Kaha’i, Mau Piailug, and Hector Busby, to name a few. It’s a vital body of information still LIVING in people today, and we add to it when we continue these practices.

The Kai Nui, Kai Iki (Big Sea, Small Sea) designs chosen for this collaboration speak to knowing one’s nearshore waters and the wider moana we all belong to. It is also a play on the ‘ōlelo no‘eau (wise saying) “Ike i ke au nui me ke au iki” (Know the large and small currents), which means to learn the details of something in order to become well versed in it.

This concept is central to navigation, where knowledge of currents both big and small is essential. These strands of knowing are not isolated, but woven together in practice.
It’s a delight to be in sustained collaboration with the team at DaFin, the Hawaiʻi based company that empower us to be safe and happy in the water anywhere in Moananuiākea.
