Good news: @oceahoceah is staying put on Budapest Beach in Toronto’s west end!! The city realized it was a mistake to give away their founding location. @oceahoceah is also expanding to a second, fixed, location at the Bluffs in Scarborough. Now it’s a matter of securing a permanent place in this city, once the four year lease is up. Everywhere you look there are opportunities for reconciliation, to move forward in a good way, to build something better. People can do so much when they’re not caught up in fighting for their basic right to exist. by @daggerstories

Last Friday night I spent the evening with Jen for her first paddle of the season with @enagbyouth at Budapest Beach in west end Toronto. Jen’s company @oceahoceah is the only Indigenous-led paddle company in the city, this kind of representation goes far beyond marketing, it affects who comes out and accesses the water. Ever since I met Jen 20 years ago she’s been working tirelessly to both personally access and to make privileged activities like yoga, snowboarding, hiking, surfing and paddle boarding more accessible. It’s vital to people’s connection to land and community. Plus it’s great for mental health and chilling the fuck out, reconnecting to our bodies. They’ll be doing three more paddles this season. 💙 by @daggerstories

Origins of paddle board and kayak rental company @oceahoceah as told by Jen’s sister Tara, here at Budapest Park. The city of Toronto is trying to give their west end permit to someone else, but they’re still here, 12 years later, and you can book in with them online every day. by @daggerstories

I grew up on Sunnyside beach and in 2012 my friend Jen brought stand-up paddle boarding via @oceahoceah to this community. She’s the only Indigenous-run paddle company in Toronto, and now she is at risk of losing her 12-year family-run business due to the city offering this location to someone else. Jen is one of the main reasons that the city even started to pilot permitting beaches to companies like hers three years ago. She advocated tirelessly, dealt with permit officers, cops and court… and now she is being shut out of her founding location. Please stay tuned, spread the word, call the city manager and @mayoroliviachow office, contact your councillor, interview her my friends in media… we’ll keep you posted on how you can constructively help. Jen helps makes this city a liveable place and serves numerous community groups all season long. Let’s have her back. by @daggerstories

Today I spent the day doing what I love: preparing for and planning a shoot. Thank you to all the colleagues (feminists) who have supported my career in documentary and my desire to direct. In Amsterdam for @idfafestival in an effort to meet more people involved in Europe’s documentary, arts, and current affairs industries. Toronto has some world class festivals but damn I’m struck by the theatres here. This one’s my favourite so far. by @daggerstories
