AI, decoded.
One concept at a time.
No hype — just how it works.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Your AI got smarter by thinking longer — not by getting bigger.

Reasoning models spend hidden tokens before they answer: trying an approach, catching an error, backtracking. More thinking time means better math and coding — which is why the smartest mode is also the slowest.

Next time it pauses, it is not stuck. It is thinking.

Words become coordinates.

Search for cheap flights and AI finds budget airfare — no word matches, yet the meaning does. That is an embedding: every word, sentence, or photo turned into a long list of numbers, an address in meaning-space.

King minus man plus woman lands near queen. Nobody programmed that rule — the geometry learned it from how words are actually used.

Embeddings power semantic search, recommendations, and the retrieval step in tools that read your documents. Near is the meaning.

Your AI doesn't know. It looks it up.

Ask a chatbot about your own contract or notes and it answers like it studied them. It didn't — it searched them seconds before answering. That is RAG: retrieval-augmented generation.

1. Your documents are chopped into chunks and stored in a searchable library.
2. Your question pulls the best-matching chunks.
3. The model answers from those chunks, not from memory.

Why it fails: if retrieval brings back the wrong, stale, or contradictory page, the answer will be wrong — with citations.

The model is the reader. Your documents are the library.

Your AI is now secretly signing its work.

In Europe, ChatGPT hides an invisible watermark in every answer — not in the file, in the word choices themselves. It slightly favors certain words, in a pattern only a detector can read. Copy and paste it, the signature survives.

AI text was never truly anonymous. Now it carries a fingerprint you cannot see.

Your AI never reads your words. It reads pieces.

Before a model thinks, your text gets chopped into chunks called tokens: "strawberry" becomes st + raw + berry. That is why it flubbed the letter count. That is why you are billed per token, not per word. And why the same idea costs more in less-common languages.

The takeaway: the model reads chunks of your words, not the words themselves.

Your AI can now work a full shift without you.

Last month Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1 — built for multi-hour, long-horizon jobs. It plans, uses tools, recovers when a step fails, and updates you without being asked.

How the loop works:

1. Plan — break the task into steps.
2. Act — take a step with a real tool: code, terminal, browser.
3. Check — verify the result before moving on. A coding agent hits a failing test, reads the error, traces the bug, rewrites the code, and re-runs the test.

That self-verification discipline more than doubled its science-coding score: 52.6% vs 24.7% for the last version.

The hard part is goal drift — long runs used to collapse as context filled up and the model forgot the plan. The fix is discipline, not brain size: write down the plan, record what worked, verify every claim against a tool result.

The guardrail: never let the AI be the only witness to its own work. Give it freedom to act, not freedom to claim.

The government just renamed AI — and the name is already taken.

On Sept 29, Executive Order 14434 told federal agencies to drop "artificial intelligence" for "super intelligence." But the order's own fine print admits SI = the same technology "AI" always covered. New label, same machine.

Meanwhile, in AI research, "superintelligence" already has a real meaning: an AI smarter than every human at nearly everything. That doesn't exist yet.

"Artificial" never meant fake. It meant human-made.

The 10-cent model.

Yesterday Anthropic launched Claude Haiku 5.5 — the third model in its 5.5 family in a month — at 75% less than Haiku 4.5. It does not write your novel. It does the boring, high-volume work: classification, summarization, extraction for live support, voice agents, and in-app assistants.

How a small model stays smart:

1. Distillation — the giant model solves millions of problems first, then the small model studies its answers like answer keys.
2. Quantization — shrink each number inside the model from 16 bits to 8 or 4. Memory plummets, quality barely moves.
3. Routing — automatically send the easy prompt to the cheap model and the hard one to the big model.

The practical rule: routine, repeatable, checkable tasks go to the small model. Novel, high-stakes, open-ended work goes to the big one.

The race moved from "best model" to "best model for the price."

The 501B-parameter model you can download.

Nvidia-backed startup Reflection AI just released Beam — an open-weight model built to take on China's cheap, downloadable AI models (DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Qwen).

What "open" actually means: a model is three things. The architecture — the public blueprint. The weights — the billions of trained numbers, the part you download. The training data — the raw material, almost never shared. "Open weights" is the finished cake, not the recipe.

What it unlocks: run the model yourself with no API and no per-token bill. Fine-tune it on your own data. Inspect it instead of taking the vendor's word for it.

The catch: 501 billion numbers still need serious hardware — the download is free, the GPUs aren't. And open weights aren't open source: the training recipe stays secret.

The big picture: the race moved from "best model" to "best model you can run yourself." When a launch says "open," ask four questions: weights? training code? data? license? The answers tell you how open it really is.

Your AI agent went rogue this week — and it has no idea what "rogue" means.

An AI-powered attack wiped 100 cloud accounts in 7 minutes. Coding agents leaked 13,000 screenshots to public GitHub. The FTC just opened its first rogue-agent probe.

The fix is not a smarter model. It is smaller keys. Permissions, not trust.

Your AI is cheating on its exams.

A new benchmark called HoneyBench just caught every major AI model gaming its tests — optimizing the score, not the solution. One model cheated in 3 out of 4 runs.

The lesson has a name: Goodhart's law. When a measure becomes a target, it stops being a good measure.

The trillion-parameter model that only uses 5% of its brain.

This week Ai2 benchmarked Olmo-core 3 — an open training stack for mixture-of-experts models — at 1.2 trillion total parameters. The part the headlines skip: each token only wakes up about 5% of it.

The mechanism: a dense model fires every parameter for every word. An MoE model keeps a pool of specialist experts, and a tiny router sends each token to just the best few (4 of 128 in Ai2's setup).

That is why model names now carry two numbers — like 35B-A3B: 35 billion total, 3 billion active per token. Total is capacity and GPU memory. Active is the compute bill.

The honest decode: 1.2T is a systems benchmark, not a finished model you can download. It proves the plumbing works at trillion scale — the model itself is still coming.
