Yesterday I found out that Percy had a little accident—yep, that can happen even at Sanctuary—and he needed a stitch. I’ve received so many messages asking how Percy is doing. He’s doing well, as you can see—almost back to his old self.

Poor Percy had a little accident yesterday 😱😢

Last night when I went to check on the pigs, I saw that Percy was coming to ask for help. He had a wound next to his armpit that was quite deep. I suspected that Winston or Teddy had been a little too rowdy after dinner and had accidentally hit Percy with one of their tusks.
I cleaned the wound and called the vet, who came by at 9:00 p.m. to apply a stitch.

Percy reacted very emotionally to being picked up and held during the stitching—that was the worst part of the whole procedure for him. Percy, as pigs are wont to do, squealed loudly.
Winston and Teddy also reacted very emotionally to seeing Percy so stressed. It was so sweet to see how they stood in the pasture, so concerned, trying to be as close to Percy as possible.

Once everything was done, Teddy and Winston had calmed down, Percy was back with them, and the vet had left, I put Percy to bed and stayed close to him until he fell asleep.

Pigs are such emotionally intelligent animals; they experience stress, want to comfort one another, and are there for each other. They see life just like we do—really, they do.

Allen had a very rough start in life. I’m so glad I was able to give him a few beautiful, loving, and carefree years. It was only respectful to Allen to let him go before he was completely worn out.

There’s always a need for roosters; as soon as a spot opens up, I make it a point—even when the grief is still deep—to immediately give that spot to a rooster in need.

Bagel is the perfect match for Moby, who was left on his own after Allen passed away. Moby is already very old and can’t see much anymore. He needs Bagel to help him with the day-to-day life of a rooster, and that’s exactly what Bagel gives him.

Future animal caretakers at work at the sanctuary!

Last Thursday, I took all my fifth- and sixth-year high school students on a field trip focused on animal care in a sanctuary. Of course Daisyfields was the first option 😉

First, they took a tour and got to know all the animals; then they observed the animals for an assignment on behavior and trauma. In the morning, we all enjoyed vegan spaghetti together, courtesy of @solidstash . In the afternoon, we pitched in to care for sick animals, tackle small tasks, and pull weeds.

It’s so important that sanctuaries are included in the third-year animal care curriculum and that our way of working is examined more closely. All the students were enthusiastic and are looking forward to coming back next month!

Millie came to the sanctuary when he was barely a few weeks old; he weighed 200 grams. Brought in by a cat, he survived an attack and was quickly taken away from his mother. His mother was never found, but his dead brothers and sisters were—one of whom died at the sanctuary a week after Millie arrived. Millie is a super-strong little rabbit; after his traumatic experience, he developed a respiratory infection, and so far we haven’t found an antibiotic that works.

Millie is now 3,5 months old and he lives inside because of his condition. He is a very special rabbit, who loves cuddles and sleeping on your lap. His first weeks of life were terror and trauma, now he can safely dream of his perfect day at the sanctuary while getting head rubs. ❤️ by @daisyfields_sanctuary

Welcome Dumpling & Kitty

Two new special needs pigeons have arrived at Daisyfields. ❤️

There is a huge lack of pigeon rescues in Flanders. Over the past two months, I have built two aviaries specifically for pigeons, and they are already completely full with pigeons who need extra care.

Unfortunately, this also means that I cannot accept any more pigeons at the moment. The demand is simply much greater than the space available.

But today, we'd like to introduce you to our two newest residents.

Dumpling is only a few weeks old. He has just learned to eat independently. He was born with one leg that is positioned a little differently. It looks different, but he can walk perfectly well and gets around just fine.

Kitty has a severe case of string feet. She has only three toes left in total. String feet is a condition that particularly affects city pigeons. Hair, thread or string can become wrapped around their toes, cutting off the blood supply and eventually causing the toes to die.

They may not be “perfect”, but they are perfectly themselves. ❤️

I know posts like these get far fewer likes and shares because they are “just” pigeons. Not as cute as our piglets, like our little celebrity Percy.

But pigeons are just as cute.
Just as intelligent.
Just as funny.
And above all: just as worthy of being seen.

And we have my beautiful, amazing Bobby, my pigeon who convinced me to open Daisyfields to pigeons in the first place, to thank for that.

My welcome committee after an 8-hour day of teaching. We missed each other just as much! Thank you, Bobby and Millie 😍

For those who missed it, I’ll be teaching animal care again this school year in the third and second grades. We’re already five weeks into the school year, and I’m finding more and more time to post something on social media 🤣 All my time goes into preparing lessons, caring for the animals, and my son. Even though it’s tough, I don’t feel like I have to work, because I put my heart and soul into it! by @daisyfields_sanctuary
