Nous nous réunissons pour yoga et séance de mindfulness, des ateliers créatifs (comme notre réunion á cote de plage sur la définition d'objectifs et petit vision board le samedi 31 janvier @makamakadkr_ 🌊🌀 et nos cercle Galentine's (Saint Valentin) 15 février ! 💕😋 - MP & RESERVER VIT), des aventures locales gratuites ou à petit prix dans la ville —comme des promenades et velo dans la nature, du bénévolat avec des associations comme @thelanguageislove pour donner de la nourriture et des vêtements, et pour créer de nouveaux liens — en priorité le bien-être et la sécurité !

Women from different countries with different languages, (some traveling from 2 hours away), all came together for a fun 3 hours+!

The best brunch in Dakar is at @mawasresto and the welcome was so warm. Mame Awa took time to share her story with us and impart wisdom woman to woman, as we all navigate life here. & the food was FIRE (pancakes, sandwiches, burritos, cinnamon rolls!) - all American style favorites that warmed our spirits (with plenty more on the menu, including delicious Senegalese staples).

Some of us also popped by @torobee_distribution -- one of the coolest vinyl record shops, to close the day.

It was a beautiful time, where sisters came alone and left with new connections & memories.

I always feel honored to organize each circle. I'm grateful for the trust from DSC members and partnering businesses, as we build offline.

Our next meeting is in the Fall. PM for the group link & news on smaller meetups until then! (English, French, Wolof welcome!)

Qu’est-ce que le Juneteenth et pourquoi est-ce important pour la diaspora ?

✊🏾 Le 19 juin 1865, les troupes de l’Union sont arrivées dans la baie de Galveston, au Texas, et ont RENFORCER la Proclamation d’Emancipation, stipulant que plus de 250 000 personnes asservies au Texas étaient désormais libres. La tradition de célébrer cette journée s’est répandue grâce aux Texans qui ont émigré vers d’autres États, et elle est rapidement devenue une fête symbolique.

Les Afro-Américains célèbrent le Juneteenth par des rassemblements qui ont vu le jour dans les églises et qui comprennent désormais des défilés, des retrouvailles accompagnées de musique et de discours, des offices religieux et des festins communautaires (comme le brunch commu@dakarsistercircle !).

Parmi les mets traditionnels, on trouve le barbecue, la « boisson rouge » (comme le soda à la fraise), la pastèque, le gâteau « red velvet » et d’autres plats rouges qui rendent hommage au sang versé et au sacrifice, et qui renvoient aux traditions ouest-africaines telles que le bissap.

Aujourd’hui, le Juneteenth rend hommage à la résilience et à l’histoire des Afro-Américains, ainsi qu’à l’impact durable de cette journée sur la lutte pour l’égalité à travers la diaspora.

Lorsque des personnes d’horizons différents construisent une communauté interculturelle, nous créons de solides réseaux de solidarité qui soutiennent le bien commun, aident nos familles et nous donnent les moyens de prendre les rênes. 💛 Les femmes, en particulier, peuvent DEVENIR… libres !

En partageant nos histoires, en nous soutenant mutuellement et en menant des actions collectives (programmes et événements communautaires, etc.), nous pouvons former une force unie pour le changement.

Nous aurons une conversation chaleureuse avec Mame Awa Hughes (Mawa), qui nous fera part de son parcours sénégalo-américain et jettera des ponts entre les cultures grâce à l’amour qu’elle met dans sa délicieuse cuisine. Ensuite, nous allumerons le feu de l’action derrière des idées qui nous servent, nous et les communautés qui nous entourent.

The women of Ngor called out the whole neighborhood of aunties, mamas, & sisters last year to help me make 200 sandwiches for Ramadan.

For Women's Day, during this year's Ramadan, I wanted to give back to them.

With 3 ladies from my women's group @dakarsistercircle (& a little helper), we packed plenty of donations (including 50 reusable hygiene kits from Association Des Mamans), & hung out by the water at Maka Maka for a chill time supporting other women.

I didn't capture talking to the ladies in the parking lot & them sharing their circumstances or how comforting it felt to be called by name & welcomed & slapping hands & joking with the mamas about last year. But I can say that building community abroad takes effort to show people you care & that you're not living around anyone to simply take.

Pour into each other, with time & support. 💛

March 7th we'll meet at @makamakadkr_ , 10h-11h30 to pack clothing & care items. 5 or so sisters in @dakarsistercircle plan to join & we need you too ✨

If you can't come, think kindly to donate via Wave / OM to @thelanguageislove for equal value @thelilbakerysn cookie or brownie bundle in-kind.

- 10,000CFA towards enough bread for 200 (This goal was met thanks to blessed donation. Reaching 350 or 400 would be amazing!)
- 5,000CFA for bulk chocopain
- 3,000CFA for bags of milk powder & sugar

AND March 8th is #internationalwomensday : if I finalize new transport, (my guy can't make it), & we receive enough food donations, we'll connect in Ngor SATURDAY or SUNDAY evening 17h30.

Moments from our 1st meet of the year 💛

Dakar can be busy, right? With beaucoup changes in life and around us, it's necessary to ground. When you can do it in a beautiful and cozy spot like @makamakadkr_ with good convo & delicious food, the view! 🌊, and a chill playlist as background music —it's even better.

Our Goal Setting Circle was perfectly calm and gave us time for introspection and meeting new people.
