I was at a wedding at the weekend and got chatting to the members of a book club. The topic turned to favourite books, and the dreaded “What’s the best book you’ve read recently?”

Off the top of my head I went for:
The Rush, by @bethlewis.author. Three women’s lives in the gold rush of 1898 in the Yukon. You emerge from the book almost feeling the grit from the trail under your fingernails, sunburned, with one eye on the lookout for the man with the itchy trigger finger, and is that a glimmer of gold over there?

Notes were taken.

I asked if any of them had read The List of Suspicious Things by @jennie.godfrey. They had not. They were not ready for my OMG YOU HAVE TO READ THIS! Set in 1979, it’s the story of Miv, a young girl in a Yorkshire village who decides to solve the mysteries of the missing women by making a list of suspicious things (and people) on her street. Utterly wonderful. It captured the feel of the era perfectly.

More notes were taken, with many oooh, that sounds fabulous.

The River Is Waiting, by @wallylambauthor (as recommended to me by @lisahallauthor - sorry they cut me off at three recommendations or I’d have thrown in a rec for yours too!)

Beautifully written, heartbreaking, hopeful and haunting. this is one which will live with you for a long time. Incredible book.

Books read in June 2026: 8

Yes, I know there are 9 in the picture. Cheating slightly on the first one - I read it at the very end of May but it missed my round-up. Time Jump by @simcoxadam is a fantastic high concept thriller. What if you could go back and change your past? Fantastic stuff. Out in September.

@sarahpinboroughbooks's Harrogate longlisted We Live Here Now is delightlfully creepy, as all of her books are!

Lucky to get a sneak peek of @tariqashkanani's new Callie Munro thriller, The Blackbird Conspiracy. Edinburgh PI with a difference. Fantastic. Out in August

Picked up @gemmadenhamauthorillustrator's The Inheritance at @criminallygoodbooksyork and read it in one sitting. Another creepy house mystery! Excellent.

Less excellent is The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook by Matt Dinniman, which I finally finished on audio. I reviewed this on the blog, it was a bit of a tangled mess for me. Not sure if I'll continue with the series (ok, I probably will)

I've not read much by Ian Rankin, but when I heard he'd done a standalone heist book, I had to read it. Found a great condition first edition hardback in Bristol, so that was my train reading for the journey home. Really enjoyed it.

I met @kediesteven at @capitalcrime1 in London and picked up a copy of his book, Running and Jumping. Who knew a book about an Olympic long-jumper would be so gripping? Fabulous, nail-bitingly tense. Highly recommended!

Also picked up @robin_brookes_author's The Arrival at Capital Crime, on the very firm recommendation of @alessandra_ranelli. High concept thriller where the killer can transport you to anywhere on earth, instantly. Clever, fast-paced, really enjoyed this one.

Last, but by no means least, we have Long Time Dead by @tmpayneauthor, who I also saw at Capital Crime. About time I caught up with her books! This one is the first in her Sheridan Holler series, and I can't wait to read the rest. Loved it.
