Thrilled to share I'm judging for the 2026 MJBowl! 🎉 This historic multi-state competition brings together cannabis pros, educators, and connoisseurs across California, Colorado, and New York, three states I've called home and watched shape this industry in very different ways as very influential cannabis markets.

I can't wait to dig into this year's standout products and put my palate to work through Budist's 100-point evaluation process. Judging isn't just about picking winners; it's about honoring the craft, the care, and the people who make great cannabis possible. Special thanks to all the brands that enter! ❤️

Winners get celebrated at MJBizCon this December. 🔥 See you in Las Vegas! @oaksterdamuniversity @budist_official

Business Lab is back!

Starting September 11, our monthly Business Lab is back and in a whole new format. We are gonna break down the current hot topics in the industry, get short, targeted presentations from expert guests, and, of course, provide our students and alumni with a space to get questions answered, brainstorm ideas, share, or otherwise avoid paying costly consultants.

Business Lab is open to all Oaksterdam students and alumni and can be accessed through your student portal (for current students) or by emailing support@oaksterdamuniversity.com (for alumni).

Here’s what’s in the lineup:

*September 11: Marketing Effects-Based Products with Angela Bacca*

In this month’s Business Lab, we are going to be discussing the marketing of effects-based products with Oaksterdam’s Director of Academics, Angela Bacca.

*October 9: The Hemp Ban: Possibilities, Impacts, and Preparation with Meital Manzuri*

*November 13: Midterm 2026 Debrief with Hirsh Jain*

Not yet a student or alum? We recommend starting with our All Access Pass so you can gain access to this Lab, 80+ video and interactive courses, resources, video libraries, and exclusive mini courses.

I am delighted to share that I have been chosen as a judge for the 2026 California Cannabis Awards. Thank you @budist_official @calcannaawards for including @oaksterdamuniversity

This year marks the fifth anniversary of a truly groundbreaking competition as the first state-sanctioned cannabis contest in the United States. It is a significant milestone for an industry that continues to garner recognition alongside California’s other renowned agricultural traditions, such as wine, craft beer, cheese, and olive oil. Yum.

As a judge, I am thrilled to help recognize the cultivators, manufacturers, and brands that are setting new standards for quality throughout the state. California remains one of the most influential cannabis-producing regions globally, and these awards spotlight the individuals and products shaping its future. As a historian, I pay homage to the trailblazing Emerald Cup @theemeraldcup, the historic Cannabis Trail @thecannabistrail, and the many shoulders we stand on to get the industry this far. We certainly have more to do to free prisoners and secure fair federal regulations, and let us rejoice in this moment of progress and celebrate quality and community. We need to feel this moment as a "win" to keep on keepin' on, and why we fight for better outcomes!

Oaksterdam will be in Sacramento to honor all the competitors and high-five the winners at the @CAStateFair on July 18. I hope to see you there and encourage you to @visitcalifornia join us in celebrating California's rich culture, heritage, and exceptional excellence in cannabis! taken in Oakland, California by @daleskyjones

Yay, 280E tax relief! ...for medical only.

So where does that leave two-thirds of state-licensed operators and consumers, who do not fall into the medical category? This is where things get sticky.

Get the facts (as they can be known) about rescheduling and find out when we do our next Legal Department webinar, all about adult-use states by commenting "Rescheduling Replay." We will DM you the link so you can watch it and sign up for notifications on the next one. taken in United States of America by @daleskyjones

The City of @oakland was the first in the nation to create an equity program post legalization. Now we are the first to promote our verified equity operators. When you see this mark on a product or advertisement, you know it was made by an operator here in Oakland, the birthplace of legalization, the culture, and the movement. Our operators set quality standards and made it legal everywhere. We are legends.

At Oaksterdam, we have a LOT of questions about what happens next with rescheduling, and we are sure you do too. We invite you to join our trusted legal subject matter experts for a virtual press conference to get them answered. This is an opportunity to learn from our working group of attorneys, who have specialized in different areas of cannabis law for decades and have the greatest insights into how this may play out and how industry players and interpretations can affect the rollout.

The panel is moderated by Oaksterdam Executive Chancellor Dale Sky Jones and features attorneys Lauren Vázquez, Dale Hunt, PhD, Dale Schafer, Luke Zimmerman, Drew Sanchez, and others to be announced.

“If the words ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’ don’t include the right to experiment with your own consciousness, then the Declaration of Independence isn’t worth the hemp it was written on.”
- Terrence McKenna. Friends, it is beyond time to remember our freedom and re-legalize. Descheduling also allows Schedule III pathway for products and research, while honoring the 9th & 10th Amendments and States' Rights to regulate too. We can do both in America and put our farmers and businesses first in the world's new market. “If the words ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’ don’t include the right to experiment with your own consciousness, then the Declaration of Independence isn’t worth the hemp it was written on.” - Terrence McKenna by Oaksterdam taken in Oakland, California by @daleskyjones
