on June 19th, 1865, General Order No. 3 was issued by a Union soldier named General Gordon Granger

this Order informed Texans that all enslaved people were now free (this came about two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863)

an original copy of the Order is currently on display inside the Hall of State at Fair Park until October 19

would you believe one of the most beautiful nature preserves in Dallas used to be the largest illegal landfill in Texas?

for over 25 years, this land was known as the Deepwood Dump. After a landmark environmental justice lawsuit brought by the surrounding community, the site was cleaned up and transformed into what is now the Trinity River Audubon Center.

it serves as a reminder that restoration is possible, both for people and for the places we call home 🩵

if you decide to visit:

🌿 go in the morning! it’s cooler, quieter, and you’ll have the best chance of spotting wildlife
🐦 keep an eye out for the Painted Bunting, which is one of North America’s most colorful birds. Late spring and early summer are some of the best times to see them!

a book lovers dream 😍

I’ve been coming to this location @halfpricebooks for more than 15 years and it’s easily my favorite 💗

it’s a family-owned chain, but this location is considered their flagship — their biggest location in the country, and the first one to open in July 1972

between browsing through books (and vinyls and comics and art) and visiting the café @lacasita_coffee and author events, (and so much more), you can easily spend hourssss here

it’s the perfect way to spend a rainy day ☔️🌦️

10/10 recommend!

this is such a fun way to spend quality time with someone 🎨🥰

there’s a $10 entrance fee (per person), and then you pick a piece of pottery that you want to paint 🖌️

each piece of pottery is priced differently, so you can find one within your budget!

for example — the rainbow mug I painted was $17 & the flower vase was $23

p.s. @colormemineplanotx will text you 10-14 days after your initial paint session to pick up your pottery (and they’ll hold your pieces for a month!)

@india_chaat_cafe is one of my favorite go-to’s (iykyk)

this neighborhood bagel spot is sooo good! 🥯

@bagelcafe21 serves the yummiest New York style bagels — made fresh every day 🤤

the staff is always so friendly and the drinks are also really yummy (I love their Chai and Iced Matcha)

+ you can order breakfast and/or lunch all day!

10/10 recommend 🍽️

@kabayan_dallas is a Filipino store & cafe where on sunday’s they serve a Filipino breakfast until 3PM — and it’s absolutely delicious 🤤

+ everyone is sooo kind & helpful and will answer any questions you have in case you don’t know what something is!

they also have karaoke, which makes for a super fun vibe & atmosphere 🎤🎵🎶

10/10 recommend 🥰
