Every player is his own puzzle.

After more than 30 years evaluating and developing baseball players, one thing has become very clear to me:

There is no one way to develop a hitter.

What works for one player may not work for the next. Different athletes. Different strengths. Different limitations. Different swings. Different needs.

Player development shouldn’t be about finding a box and trying to make every player fit inside it.

It should start by understanding the player standing in front of you.

EVERY PLAYER IS HIS OWN PUZZLE.

That’s not just something we say. It’s how we believe players should be developed.

Baseball was never the goal.

It’s the vehicle.

The classroom where young men learn:

discipline
accountability
resilience
how to handle failure
how to compete

But too many fathers get caught up in:

teams
stats
exposure
short-term results

And miss what actually matters.

The game will end one day.

But who your son becomes…

will last the rest of his life.

That’s the real purpose of this journey.

The game is just the classroom.

Building great hitters isn’t just about mechanics.
Developing great men isn’t just about being on the field.

It’s about the intersection of both.

Inside my program, you’ll see two things:
Elite hitting development
Father leadership

Because great hitters are built where skill meets guidance.

Come Swing The Damage Hitter Shield.

“This profession isn’t about the wins and losses. … How do I impact this person?” — Pat Murphy, Brewers manager

“Every kid I coach, they have parents who love their kid the way I love my kid.”

BUILD THE HITTER. BUILD THE PERSON.

The goal is not to make every hitter the same. The goal is to help each person become the best version of themselves.

I’m not anti-data. Exit velocity is awesome. Bat speed is awesome.

But two hitters can walk in with nearly the same readout and need completely different work. The readout tells me what happened. It doesn’t tell me why, and it doesn’t tell me who the hitter is.

That’s why every evaluation starts with understanding the player — how he moves, what his body can and can’t do yet, how he competes — before we decide what to develop and how.

MEASURE EVERYTHING WORTH MEASURING WITHOUT PRETENDING EVERYTHING WORTH KNOWING IS MEASURABLE.

Parents: the number is a starting point, not the player.

“Quite frankly, it’s how baseball’s supposed to be played.” — Derek Jeter on “Brewer Ball”

Great pitching. Great defense. Timely hitting. Winning the close ones.
Some of that shows up on a stat sheet. Some of it never will.

MEASURE EVERYTHING WORTH MEASURING WITHOUT PRETENDING EVERYTHING WORTH KNOWING IS MEASURABLE.

Numbers matter, but numbers are outputs. Development must also understand what produces the outputs.

Old-school development. New-school measurement.

Why do you hit at Damage Hitter?

We asked our hitters. Marshall Awtry (Blue Valley Northwest 2028):

“I hit at Damage Hitter because of how well I learn my swing here.

A good coach shows you how to find flaws in your own swing and teaches you to fix them yourself.

In the cage or mid-game I know my adjustments I need to make in order to take a good swing every time.”

Congratulations, Marshall, on your commitment to Dartmouth. 🔥

“There’s a big difference between having an opinion about the game and disrespecting someone who actually mastered their craft enough to play it professionally.” — Cameron Maybin

This isn’t new. It’s been coming on generation after generation.

“The day that the old guys put their arm around the young guys and the young guys put their arm around the old guys and they meet in the middle about development versus measurement, metrics versus playing the game, is the day that our game gets better.” — Coach Karl

Old-school development. New-school measurement.

MEASURE EVERYTHING WORTH MEASURING WITHOUT PRETENDING EVERYTHING WORTH KNOWING IS MEASURABLE.

Data informs development. Data does not define the player’s identity.

That’s why we built Damage Hitter and the Do Damage Performance Lab.

Why do you hit at Damage Hitter?

We asked our hitters. Miles Washington (Pembroke Hill 2027):

“…because of the type of leader and role model Coach Karl is. He makes it to where you should know what you’re doing and what you’re doing wrong, and how to change it without anyone else having to tell you. He also makes sure that you are thinking about the right things before you step into the box. Also, he doesn’t just give you baseball hitting lessons. He also gives you advice on what to do for the future. For example, what workouts you should be doing, what food you should be eating, and so on and so forth.”

Congratulations, Miles, on your commitment to Mississippi Valley State. 🔥

“THE GAME TODAY WOULD RATHER LOSE ANALYTICALLY THAN WIN BASED ON FEEL.” — Joe Maddon

It was never data vs. feel.

Old-school development. New-school measurement.

The numbers should serve the hitter, not replace the coach who knows the athlete. Feel, experience and a trained eye still matter. So does the data.

Why do you hit with Damage Hitter?

We asked our hitters. Cade Martinez (De Soto High School 2025 | Johnson County Community College):

“I hit with Damage Hitter because he provides unmatched feedback and advice in a challenging yet supportive environment. His philosophy translates directly and helps players build consistency and confidence. He goes beyond just being a coach by investing in athletes’ development on and off the field.”
