I honestly never thought I would be anywhere near where I am currently at in my life.
So, I told myself that, despite the lack of interest, I would attend at least one of my actual High School Reunions.

In my imagination, I would show up, catch a bit of football, then walk on over to some sizable location inside my massively sprawling Alma Mater and awkwardly man a dark corner where I would enjoy some people watching between sips of slightly watered down coke. Occasionally having the obligatory small talk catch-up conversation with people I recognized, but didn’t recognize me (“I remember your hair!”, “weren’t you the only guy that took Dance?”).

Smiles, nods, “good looking bunch!”, and plenty of “good to see yous”.

Maybe I would run into a couple of my old superiors who, I’m also sure would either not recognize me at all, or begrudgingly recognize me. We would of course have a chat about what I’ve been doing with my life, how much they needed to retire, and that it sounds like I did okay for myself.

I could sneak off into a couple abandoned hallways to find some old classrooms, see what’s changed, and what hasn’t. Have a few laughs to myself about memories I’m sure only I have, then quietly disappear into the night.

Imaginations, right?

Rarely do they match reality.
And that’s okay.

And despite being nothing like I imagined, it was refreshing to see two things that never change;

1.) Kids. Friends. Just trying to figure it all out. Probably thinking the same things I was thinking. And that’s cool.

2.) I am still perpetually afraid that if I don’t learn Maths, I will never be able to graduate.

Time is funny.

Cheers Class of ‘06. May you never stop growing. Be safe, and be well.
And to those of us no longer on this side, may you be at peace on the other.
