 7. TEXTURED CABINET
L 100 x W 50 x H 90 cm
Plywood, faux bois painting

Textured Cabinet is part of a series exploring the relationship between form and surface. Inspired by digital 3D modeling, the work begins with a simple, neutral shape defined only by its geometry, with the surface added afterward. In this piece, a wood grain is painted onto plywood, creating the illusion of solid wood. The material is only a surface effect, not part of the structure. By separating structure from appearance, the work highlights the gap between what the object is and what it seems to be.

4. OCEAN SUNSET Thermoformed glass, gold leaf
Ø 90 cm

This series of 5 glass pieces, gilded with gold leaf, evokes the shifting light of a sunset over the ocean. Each tone of gold corresponds to a different moment in the transition from dawn to dusk. Applied to the surface of thermoformed glass, the gold leaf creates subtle variations in colour and reflection. The composition unfolds through a sequence of hues, ranging from pale to deep tones: white gold (13.25 kt), green gold (18 kt), light yellow gold (22 kt), yellow gold “extra” (23 kt), and champagne gold (22.5 kt).

 Mass-coloured stoneware
These ceramics works capture liquid moments in clay. A raindrop grazing the water, a fragment of ocean suspended in time. Between the permanence of the material and the fragility of the phenomenon, each work preserves the trace of a moment that is constantly fading away.

3.1. GLAZ GREEN Ø 110 cm Thermoformed and silvered green glass

Glaz Green is a mirror inspired by the movement of ocean waves. When two waves meet in opposite phases— when the crest of one meets the trough of another — they partly cancel each other out, reducing their height. The title refers to “glaz,” a word used in Brittany to describe the shifting colour of the sea, somewhere between green, blue, and grey. This unstable colour is reflected in the material itself: the tinted and silvered glass creates changing hues and reflections.

 1. MER NOIRE Ø 120 x H 36 cm Leather, patinated steel Mer Noire is a coffee table derived from the observation of the sea—its constant movement and continuously shifting surface. The work translates this unstable condition into a fixed object. The tabletop is formed by shaping leather over a structure, using the material’s flexibility to produce a relief that recalls the surface of water. Once set, the leather retains these deformations, preserving the traces of the forming process. Its textured surface interacts with light in a way comparable to caustic reflections on water.

MIMESIS
Solo exhibition @cidgrandhornu 14.06.26 → 15.11.26

Mimesis brings together two decades of exploration, assembling works shaped through the interaction between advanced technological processes and elemental forces such as heat and air along with the changing states of materials. Across the exhibition, perception is continuously tested: what is seen, what is understood, and what remains unresolved.

EXHIBITION ⎮ @damiengernay at @cidgrandhornu Mimesis brings together two decades of work by Brussels-based designer Damien Gernay, in his first major solo exhibition at @cidgrandhornu. Structured around fire, water, air, rock and forest, the exhibition unfolds as a sensitive dialogue between material, craft and illusion. Aristotle described mimesis — imitation — as a natural human activity, and a way of making sense of the world. Gernay observes, reconstructs and recreates reality through interpretations that are as curious as they are intelligent. His surfaces appear shaped by time or erosion, yet are entirely constructed, and leave perception oscillating between the familiar and the enigmatic. Pieces such as Textured Cabinet and the Lumberjack shelves turn functional furniture into a sensory experience: seemingly carved from raw trunks, they blur the line between nature and fabrication, between object and sculpture. The work invites us to slow down our gaze and question what we think we recognise. Trained in industrial design at ESA Saint-Luc in Tournai, Gernay works between art and design — shaping certain pieces by hand in his studio, developing others with specialised craftspeople, and remaining involved across the entire process. Damien Gernay. MIMESIS Solo exhibition @cidgrandhornu 14.06.26 → 15.11.26 Opening on 13 June from 6 pm CID Grand-Hornu is pleased to present Mimesis, a solo exhibition by designer Damien Gernay, offering an overview of two decades of work that explores nature, materiality, and craftsmanship. Through his hyperreal representations and enigmatic surfaces, Gernay draws viewers into a space where perception oscillates between the familiar and the uncanny.
The exhibition brings together a group of works  that translate natural phenomena into material processes, combining digital tools, industrial fabrication, and specialized craft techniques. Across sculpture and functional objects, the works explore how light, water, air, and surface texture can be transformed through different materials and methods.

EXTRACTION Vase #01 Casted stoneware, smoke-firing
Ø27 x H45cm
From the 3D scan of a rock taken from the real world begins a process of translation, where data becomes form, and form becomes artifact.
The raw material undergoes a triple displacement: first virtualized, then re-materialized through stoneware molding, and finally textured by smoke-firing.
This passage from one state to another produces a perceptual ambiguity: the form appears familiar, almost geological, yet at the same time archetypal, artificially recomposed.
Smoke-firing, both a natural ornament and an added stratum, enhances the speculative nature of the object: not simply a rock, but the idea of a rock, its trace, its model, its fiction. By shifting extraction into the virtual realm, we proposes a sculptural gesture that spares the physical landscape. The work engages with a digital ecology of forms, where matter is simulated, reimagined, and made tangible—without being consumed. © @elinewillaert #ceramicart #ceramicsculpture #sculptures #design #contemporaryceramics #ceramiquecontemporaine #collectibledesign #artwork #oneofakind #ceramiccollection #interiordesign #sculpture #ceramicsculpture
