ANYANWU / Eye of the Sun

“Ayanwu”meaning the sun in my native tongue, Igbo, was inspired by an interview quote from veteran African film director Ousmane Sembene - “Why be a sunflower that turns towards the sun? I myself am the sun!”

His quote provided a conceptual framework for exploring the intersections of autonomy and visibility. This collaborative project is a response to the external pressures of self-evaluation and the even larger questions of merit historically imposed upon individuals of African descent.

“Anyanwu” connects themes of storytelling community, personal history, and chosen family by centering collective reflection and cultural memory. The work also draws from my own lived experience as a Nigerian creative while honoring the quiet bonds that exist between people who see themselves reflected in one another.
