@karelflores takes the lead in the interactive film for the “All Dancing Allowed” dance floor inside the exhibition, Urban Stomp: Dreams & Defiance on the Dance Floor that was at @museumofcityny.

This film was projected on the wall behind an actual dance floor, the dancers appeared 10 feet tall when you put a record on the decks. Other projections of the dancers moved across cloth, mirrors, lights, and shadows, so you can see partnerwork, shines, turns, dips, and musicality. No experience needed, just come as you are and dance. An experience!

As Curator, the point was bigger than placing salsa and mambo dancing inside a history museum exhibition, though this was the first exhibition in the world, of this size, to do that.

The point was to let people feel how this music and dance can bring people together on the same floor. And for at least a moment, the dance floor can hold our dreams, possibility, and defiance when needed.

It was intentional that this film was led by a woman and included dancers with heritage connected to Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Polynesia, Colombia, the U.S. South, and New York City, while honoring the Afro-Latin roots of salsa and mambo, nurtured in NYC with deep roots in the Caribbean and Africa.

The film also included dance students from the @hsanyc , giving young dancers a chance to work alongside professionals and see how leaders move with humility and grace.

Music from @los_hacheros , @karelflores , @damistabu and I went on to work together with Carnegie Hall Outdoors with @laexcelencia_salsadura to bring the culture to the people.
