Details? Yes, the devil is in the “Cochrane Bricolage” details! And for the mosaicist, a true investment in time. As one intrigued visitor noted ‘he could spend many hours exploring the details within the piece’’. Yes, the artist’s goal of capturing the audience’s attention has been achieved!!!

Mosaics more often than not is all about the details! The best decision I made was to get down and dirty and work on my public art pieces going forwards to ensure these details get translated as I had envisioned. With head, hands and heart, lots of patience and a lot of problem solving along the way.

Some details that warranted inclusion on my sculpture “Cochrane Bricolage” - Summer evenings hang gliding and , paragliding with a friend was one of my first introductions to Cochrane decades ago that brought me to this windy town. The town is still abundantly natured with the ubiquitous deer, occasional fox and the once a year appearance of the heron that I see flying overhead in the summer. Houses on the hills have spectacular views of the town valley below and the day and night skies are breathtaking with lots of sunshine and big moonscapes.

Over 2500 hours was invested in the tile assembly phase of this project and as is the case with large scale mosaic work, many hands along the way to bring all phases of the project together and to completion.

Did you know that there are 6 sides to every story? This little, big town of Cochrane certainly has many.

My mosaic sculpture “Cochrane Bricolage” showcases the stories of the Town of Cochrane’s past, present and future. Narratives that are featured against the backdrop of this 6 sided abstracted mountain(s) shape.

Big skies throughout the days and nights, the seasons, nature still wild and in abundance, its ranching history, and the ubiquitous train and Bow River frames these scenes all year round. This is a town that I have seen in my 30 years - always under construction - locally owned Garmin Canada headquarters is located here as well as the RCMP. These are only just small snippets of what this town is all about.

I endeavoured to convey these ideas and the town’s energy, sense of play,nostalgia and charm through candy coloured glass tiles, composition and its many details, to engage and keep all those who see the #sculpture intrigued by Cochrane’s many enduring facets for many years to come.

I came to #Cochrane over 30 years ago to watch a friend paraglide and hanglide. We would top off the day with some @Mackaysicecream at the end of the day. Photo tours with Darwin Wigget drew me to this charming town. I work here and play here still. Cochrane will always have a piece of my heart and I am honoured to have been chosen by the @townofcochrane to have my mosaic sculpture chosen to be part of its #vibrant cultural landscape.

The #sculpture represents a significant milestone for me for which I will be forever grateful to those who helped along the way.

A little insight into my
sculpture Cochrane Bricolage :

“The sculpture seeks to showcase and celebrate the diversity and contrasts existing within the town of Cochrane: the small town with a big city feel. Cochrane has come of age - a unique and dynamic town where the past present and future come together, colliding and exploding with energy. The distinctive mountain and country landscapes frame of collage of scenes: The train, winding Bow River, spectacular sunsets, and sunny moon and moonlight skies. Also celebrated is the town’s farming and ranching Heritage, family, culture, and business. Cochrane has it all: a place for family to live and play surrounded by parks, flora and fauna, industry, recreation and history all in one place contributing to its vibrancy uniqueness and charm.”

Thanks to CMA2 for the gift of scholarship!

I jetted off to Nashville, Tennessee to attend a chair workshop with Sherri Warner Hunter in a beautiful part of the Tennessee countryside Bell Buckle.

A week of awesome fun and tutelage by a very fine sculptor and in addition I had the pleasure of great company with fellow colleagues who may have a bit of a chair fetish too. Sherri is a real problem solver and very gracious with her time and energy and hospitality. (She happens to be. A real chef - Check the food out!) and her future courses coming up shortly.

My chair arrived safely in Alberta for future mosaic work. Stay tuned!

Last Saturday we celebrated the unveiling of my new mosaic sculpture, Cochrane Bricolage at the Station at Cochrane Crossing. Much gratitude to the town of Cochrane for making a project like this possible and the folks who assisted me on the various phases of the project - tile assembly, tile setting and cleanup. A milestone has been reached!

Over 2500 Hours of tile assembly was completed to my design specifications with Cecilia’s assistance on several panels. We spent the better part of a year on the tile assembly.
Keith and I completed the tile application on the last leg of this journey. Ash Deb Larry and Gina took care of the rest of the fine finishing details.
