Yorkshire Mountain Bike Marathon 2026 🥇 40km

I’ve wanted to do a Marathon XC race for a while, but the Dirty Nocka 3hr in May showed me that my back wouldn’t entertain an even longer event, unfortunately. So I entered the one lap 40km race at YMTBM rather than the full two lap 80km event. At 2:18 it was still a fair bit longer that the typical races I do, and one big loop (in great scenery), as opposed to 6 laps of a small course, was great. Some rough climbs, fun single track and some stretches of flat/gravel roads allowed some off-road TTing, a great variety. Having an idea of the likely duration I just gunned it from the start and was first back, which was nice!

A really well run event, kudos to @yorkshiremtbmarathon and @northernride. I plan to be back next year and will work on durability to have a go at the full course.

Seems like nearly every cyclist who races off road was at The Gralloch this weekend, in sunny Scotland. Rainy Cannock Chase for me, at the Dirty Nocka. Great course (vast majority of it singletrack trails), challenging conditions and really well organised by @mayeractiveuk

As seems to now be the norm for me, I finished a little inside in the top half in the Solo 3hr category. On the face of it that’s pretty frustrating, but it certainly beats being a newbie and finishing near the back as was the story when I started out, so I guess that’s progress!

This was planned to get my eye in for a longer XC marathon event, but the fatigue from the trails was brutal and my back was killing at the end, so some thinking to do there…..fair play to those doing the 6hr category!

Back to racing at the start of March 🤩 Great to be back racing XC at the @focus_rides_coaching Winter Series. A fair bit of work needed on fitness, but winning a sprint for a middle of the pack 26th is at least good fun!

Followed up with a somewhat disappointing gravel race at Sherwood Pines last weekend. To rub salt in the wound I lost one of my nice @velotooluk bottles in the singletrack somewhere! 😭 Karma for attempting to style it out along the jumps 🤦‍♂️

Spring is on the way and as the days get longer hopefully training hours will correlate 🤞

Gralloch 2025.

Great day out, incredible weather again (as per @theparacyclist “I’m beginning to think the Scottish lie to us about the weather”), amazing scenery, event was run like clockwork, great course, and managed to (pretty much) avoid incident, can’t ask for much more.

111km - 1761m elevation - 80% off road - 4hr 24m was enough for 81st in age category, which was a top half finish. It’s not what I hoped for, the last hour or so was incredibly hard, I probably didn’t pace it quite right and my back was killing (can’t even blame age for that, it’s always been an issue…) - a bit of analysis and reflection required.

For the fellow nerds;

800g of carbs consumed on Friday, 200g for breakfast and 370g during the race, 2.6L of drink downed. Approximately 3,500 calories burned. 244w NP for 3 hours at 161bpm average, before fading towards the end 🥵.

Thanks @velotooluk for the last minute stock up of co2 canisters (and everything else), also to @twenty21coaching and @peakin_high_performance for their valuable, quality input and support 🙌.

Started to take mid-ride photos regularly to see if any come out looking like it’s hilly. None do, but I’ll try again in Scotland soon, maybe that’ll do it. #hillsmadeflatfilter

Great ride up Mt. Teide on Tenerife…well, half way up. Nice to get away from the UK weather, if only for a week. Not a selfie person, but squeezed one in here, repping the @velotooluk jersey on the continent 💪
