SPIRITUS - recording at @sloanechurch

A glimpse into the recording of the organ part for SPIRITUS, beautifully played by @makototheorganist . In this section, breath sounds recorded with prisoners inside the prison continue underneath as their voices begin humming chords, blending with the gentle organ chords and low humming sustained pedal note.

The full recording of SPIRITUS is on my website, link in bio. by @dan_samsa

The Tempest with @vachebaroque × @outofchaostheatre

I had such a brilliant time creating the surround-sound pieces for this production. Before the show I recorded the incredible cast and musicians, then used those recordings as the raw material for a series of spatial sound pieces, building an island literally “full of noises” around the performers and audience.

Amazing working with my talented cousin Jonathan Darbourne, whose musical direction and vision shaped this whole strange and magical world, alongside the brilliant director Paul O’Mahony from Out of Chaos. And of course @bettymak101 for smashing it behind the scenes.

A special huge thank you to Simon Honywill and Dom Harter, and the @timaxspatial / @martinaudio team, for helping to bring the pieces into three dimensions across their incredible immersive sound system, and a special shout-out to Ryan for triggering everything live and exactly where they were supposed to be.

This has been one of the most fulfilling and transformative artistic experiences so far.

Over the past few months, I’ve been working on SPIRITUS, a piece that brings the unheard voices of incarcerated men into direct resonance with the acoustic atmosphere of sacred spaces.

Born from meditative vocal workshops we led inside prisons, the entire piece acts as a sonic meditation. The recorded voices are projected into the space on the spatial sound system, and woven alongside live organ played by Makoto James, who embraced this piece with immense thoughtfulness and spirit.

Coming soon…

As part of @ideas.test Art on the Delta festival, I’ll be taking over Rochester Cathedral throughout the day tomorrow alongside organist Makoto James @makototheorganist to perform my new work SPIRITUS, a combination of live cathedral organ, edited recordings I created with 2 groups inside Rochester and Highdown prisons, and spoken word from a man that has lived experience of the justice system.

Come down, it’s free
