Ever wonder what wanders around Alaska Bear Camp when we’re not looking?
Our team set up trail cameras around our camp in Lake Clark National Park to find out and they’ve captured some pretty incredible visitors. From curious brown bears and playful foxes to the occasional wolf passing through, these cameras offer a glimpse into the wild lives unfolding when no one is watching.

My favorite mom at bear camp.

She and her cubs passed us several times over the course of the last few days. Every time, she calmly led them by. I can’t help but wonder what those little cubs are thinking as they move past us.

Encounters like this don’t happen by accident. They’re the product of decades of giving bears the space and respect they deserve. Here, the bears decide how close they want to be. We wait, observe, and feel lucky when they choose to let us into a small piece of their lives. taken in Lake Clark National Park & Preserve by @danacama

Why do so many photographers want to pretend wildlife live in a world without us?

On a recent trip through Yellowstone and Grand Teton, I had a conversation with some guests about how difficult it can be to photograph wildlife without any sign of humans in the frame. We edit out tracking collars, avoid roads and buildings, and do our best to erase ourselves from the picture.

But living alongside us is the reality for so many animals. Does that make them any less wild?

To me, some of the most important conservation stories live right here. How wildlife is adapting to us, and how we can do a better job of living alongside them. taken in Yellowstone National Park by @danacama

I’ve been a punk kid my entire life. I started my photo career touring with bands. Life looks a lot different these days, but I think it’s pretty punk to care about the environment.

It’s punk to not hate things you don’t understand.

To preserve pristine ecosystems

To be active in helping to expand outdoor education and awareness. Not gatekeep.

To have quiet places

It’s punk to collaborate on grassroots solutions

To be persistent. To be more than a keyboard warrior! taken in Lake Clark National Park & Preserve by @danacama

It’s the most wonderful time of year here in the GYE. The moose & elk are in rut, bears are busy packing on the pounds for winter, and fall is settling into the mountains. I just returned from guiding a photo expedition through Yellowstone & Grand Teton for @naturalhabitatadventures to capture it all. Grateful to share the magic of this place with such an awesome group!

It’s September 3rd and the leaves are already starting to change. I slept in my hammock along the river and woke up to this herd of bighorns coming to check me out. Sometimes it pays to fall asleep reviewing your photos. by @danacama

Somewhere
a black bear
has just risen from sleep
and is staring
down the mountain.
All night
in the brisk and shallow restlessness
of early spring
I think of her,
her four black fists
flicking the gravel,
her tongue
like a red fire
touching the grass,
the cold water.
There is only one question:
how to love this world.
I think of her
rising
like a black and leafy ledge
to sharpen her claws against
the silence
of the trees.
Whatever else
my life is
with its poems
and its music
and its glass cities,
it is also this dazzling darkness
coming
down the mountain,
breathing and tasting;
all day I think of her-
her white teeth,
her wordlessness,
her perfect love.
