i had the pleasure of seeing @rocketshipband in LA earlier this month. it was a great experience! in the days after the show, i made a some art to commemorate the experience. i didn’t end up taking any pictures, so it was based off my emotions and memories from the night.

finally getting around to posting my show!

i’m so grateful for the experiences I had thanks to this exhibition. it was one of the most rewarding things I did this semester and i had so many lovely conversations with people that week.

as a reflection of my show’s theme, in the gallery i gave people an optional prompt to write in a notebook: “tell me about someone from your past or present who has shaped who you are.”
here are some of my favorite responses. I hope they touch you in the same way they’ve touched me:

“My first grade teacher shaped what would later become my love of medieval fantasy. Her classroom was castle themed and rewards for good behavior were pictures of dragons. I’m working to be a fantasy novelist now.”

“I met someone who changed my view on everything & we don’t talk anymore but I see them in the leaves swaying in the wind & the kindness in others.”

“My father, for all his faults, has probably the most claim to my current ‘shape.’ Apart from bearing his name, I do owe a lot of my humor and bubbly personality to him. Also helps that he served as a living cautionary tale for some of the pitfalls.”

“Everyone I have met here at CSULB has taught me how to love and receive love unconditionally.”

“You shared with me today about a high school art teacher who changed you. I relate because my high school art teacher was the first person to ever insist that I was a ‘fine artist.’ I still think about her all the time & you’ve inspired me to reach out & thank her or share some of my new work.”

You’ve Changed Me is a collection of figurative paintings, drawings, and sculptures that explores the relationships that shape me— both past and present. These works focus on the people and relationships that have had a profound impact on my identity, growth, and self-perception. Some works are literal depictions of the people I love, while others offer symbolic representations of the types of people I’ve been in relationship with. Immortalizing them through physical artwork is an intimate process that allows me to not only express the gravity and tangibility of their impact on my life, but also pay homage to them for doing so.
