Jubilee❤️❤️❤️
I have officially completed my joint senior thesis at Bard College and I couldn’t be more relieved!!! An art exhibition and a 68 page anthropology paper on my thoughts and consideration of caricature. I am very proud of myself and EVERYONE who helped me! Thank you to my advisors, Rebecca Morgan and Andrew Bush, my wonderful peers who helped me install and provided consistent feedback, and of course my parents for birthing me and always supporting my academic/artistic endeavors. This experience was so important for me as a developing young person, I’ve learned so much! Thank you to EVERYONE who came to see my show, especially those from far away! Thank you for your time, patience, attention, and considerations. It means more than anyone will ever know. Close ups of the pieces will be posted soon! Trying traditional comics and figuring out what I like and what I need. If you have any tips on analog comics, give them to me!!! How I’m feeling so far:
I miss working on grid paper because it made layout so much easier and my lines straighter. And I hate erasing over my lineart, it makes getting a good scan harder because you can sometimes still see the pencil and also eraser shavings. So I probably need to get a large grid sketchbook for the sketches and layout and a lightbox to be satisfied. Wondering if I should use Bristol if I use a lightbox. And if I should get bigger sized paper. by @danamakes.comics

Black Kids “Black August (Reprise)”

Black August is officially over and so is my series of comics on the month :) Thank you so much for reading and sharing and learning alongside me and my Black kids. This was my first year participating in Black August and I was extremely imperfect. But that is why it is a practice, and similar to Ebony, I will carry what I’ve learned during this month for the rest of my life. I am fulfilled the most with my work when it accurately aligns with my politics and my beliefs on life. To more alignment with our goals, passions, and convictions.

I love this comic in conversation with Mad Blacks and the first Black August comic, I’ve enjoyed building the continuity between those three comics specifically. I will never be done making Black Kids comics, but a break is on the horizon for me :) How did Black August go for you? What have you learned about yourself or the Black liberation movement? How have you reevaluated your relationship or lack their of with incarcerated comrades? These are not accusations but genuine inquiry. We are all learning together :)✊🏾

Black Kids, “Black August”

This is my first year participating in Black August and I found it fitting to have my Black Kids participate with me. It’s been wonderful seeing more Black people celebrate and learn the history of Juneteenth, and I think it’d be cool to bring more awareness to this celebration too. For the month of August my comics will revolved around the topic of how we can learn, support, and carry on the traditions of our Black political prisoners and revolutionaries, with a comedic slight of course :). I encourage anyone interested in participating to do so as well!

[Excerpt from blackaugustpo.org] Black August is the antithesis to “celebration” and empty “homage.” Black August attempts to place struggle and sacrifice on center stage. In this respect, Black August summons all progressive people who identify with the legacy of resistance to colonial oppression to actively participate in Black August. Thus during the entire month of August in commemoration of those Africans who have made the supreme sacrifice for the cause of African Liberation and reflect upon the significance of those contributions as well as to draw closer to the continuing necessity for resistance, we embrace the following as tenets to be practiced during Black August.

Tenets of the Black August Program

A fast which historically has been used as an expression of personal commitment and resistance.
During BA we emphasize political and cultural studies for individuals involved in BA. Participants in BA should pair off with someone else you know to study and share knowledge of African affairs.
As an outward expression of BA we wear a black arm band on the left arm or wrist as a tribute to those Africans who have died as a result of their sacrifice for African Liberation. The arm band can be worn either on the inside or outside of your clothing.
