3 Years of The Grove 🤯 A few words from me (Charlie):

I can’t believe it’s been 3 years since we opened the doors of our independent, family built, live music venue, event space and party place. We’ve had hundreds of gigs, loads of events, cup finals, parties, markets, Nobby Solano, seated talks, a mechanical bull, absolutely all sorts. It’s been incredible.

It’s never actually smoothly sailing mind… we’ve had power cuts, cyber attacks, burst pipes, till failures on the busiest days, year on year cost increases, that time the grease trap exploded… countless moments where I wonder what’s the point in doing it all.

But then I give it a minute, and think about The Grove’s second year and we’ve done loadssss! We’ve had - the Patrick Topping takeover, the Carabao Cup Final, Nick Woltemade with GQ, School Assembly Bangers Bottomless Brunch (aye, really…), 500 fairground owners from the Hoppings, Mercury Prize Fringe events, loads of people’s special moments from work dos to hen dos, baby showers to birthdays, engagement parties to first gigs. Drag Shows and heavy metal, kids parties and Drum & Bass Raves, Andrew Cushin and 14 different blokes called Andy’s birthday parties. Pizza slices and summer cinema nights… I could go on and on.

Running this place is a never ending clusterF*** of stress and laughs, working with some of the best people (shout out to Ellis and the staff) often on a shoestring and little sleep to produce some of the most amazing moments. I literally had my own Wedding in The Grove last July.

We always wanted The Grove to be a place seriously for everyone - to see great live music, sink pints with mates, attend a proper variety of events, and celebrate your own personal moments.

To celebrate our own 3rd birthday, we thought we’d stick to what we do best - throwing a massive FREE ENTRY party. So, on Saturday 21st March you can expect:

> Full day of North East original Live Music (10 bands/acts) in the venue
> FIFA Tournament and footy on the big screen outside
> Old school gift party bags with random treats inside
> Loads of Free Drinks (Sponsors TBA)
> DJs and party vibes upstairs until late

Mercury Prize + Mercury Fringe Dump ✨

What a magical time the last week or so in the North East has been with a brilliant programme of work spearheaded by @generatorhq with the Fringe events, culminating in Mercury Prize itself, first time ever held outside of London, at the Arena and our own @sam_fender winning it. All the activity, the shows, the talks, the buzz and feeling around the city over the last week or so has been so palpable. Pure pride.

Thank you to big man @adam_macca_ for asking me to take part in the conference day, full circle moment not asking the questions but answering them, lovely to be on there with @theclunynewcastle’s Ross Lewis, @jasmine.padgett & Sami from @cobaltstudios.ouseburn and the excellent @sybilinlondon

Thank you to @antnotion @astonesthrowfestival @notionliveevents for pulling together our brilliant Fringe night & Mixer at @thegrovenewcastle with @adultdvdmenu @finnforstermusic @rye.miss - absolute topper night!

Other key highlights - @erniethechef at The Glasshouse, @imogenandtheknife at @threetannersbank, drinking in the Crown, and basically @chyarohylton or @scott.fade every time I saw them. Seeing old friends, making new ones.

Lastly, huge shout to all the people that worked across bringing such a momentous occasion to Newcastle, pushing the city forward, moving the needle - Mick Ross, @davefhaley, Jim Mawdsley, @wendy___smith @alicegracejazz @michelleescoffery @missbutlers Macca @theavandervelde @jessie_mallinson and all the other partners.

I’m so proud to be a geordie, of the city, the region and the hardworking, supportive, driven, community leading people within it.

So this weekend, we're trialing an experiment @thegrovenewcastle - we've booked 2 days of live music across two floors, containing some of the most exciting new acts to come out of the UK. Both headliners of both days are all over the radio at the moment, selling out across the country.

Now.. to be open and transparent with you all, tickets aren't selling. This is a common thing across the industry in general, which we knew but we took the risk anyway and do regularly. People go out less, they drink less, and listen to new music less. If it's not algorithm friendly, artists have very little chance on growing an audience without throwing £££ at meta ads, Spotify playlists, and 'content creation'. The whole industry is in its gambling era. More specifically our gamble at a 2 festival is struggling and at this rate, we stand to lose a fair bit of money. We can just about stomach that however a bigger shame is for people to miss out on these acts entirely, and the next time they come around, they either miss Newcastle entirely, or it's a pricey City Hall ticket hall in 5 years time. Or they break up.

I'm fully aware of the current economic times.. we're living in an expensive time, where disposable income and spending on luxuries (like going to gigs) is less obtainable. So... in the interest of sharing the experience of live music with all of you I'd like to extend the option of a 50% discounted rate for tickets for Exit Music. That's 18 live acts for £15. That's 84p per act.

If you head to the tickets and put in "Lance" and the check-out you'll find this option. Applies to day tickets or the weekend ticket. We're also allowing free entry to the Friday night show with one of these tickets too.

Otherwise, across the Bank Holiday - we are open as usual and open until 2am with DJs on.

Sorry for conning you all on my personal account with a completely unrelated picture. A bloke I bumped into in karaoke bar last night (who we shared mutual friends) signed my pizza box.
