POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Listen, we love a good, heartwarming story. But here at @dancespiritmagazine, we’re fans of when dance gets a little spooky, too.

There’s nothing like the physicality of live performance to give you the heebie-jeebies. It seems audiences agree: “Dracula” ballets are continuing to explode left and right, and we’ve seen our fair share of choreography in horror movies as of late.

Can you blame us for wanting more?

Swipe for a few classic movies we’re dying to see reimagined as full-length dance productions, and head to the link in our bio for the full list! 👻

Descriptions
1) Four skeletons dance in a row against a hot pink backdrop. Text: 7 Halloween Movies We Want to See as Full-Length Dance Productions
2) Text: Coraline (2009) A plucky protagonist, a snarky cat, jumping mice, and perhaps the freakiest villain in all of animation history: It would take the right costume and set design—plus some major special effects—but just imagine Coraline onstage. The movie, based on Neil Gaiman’s novella of the same name, would make for a frightfully good ballet or dance theater work.
3) Text: Hocus Pocus (1993)
Sarah Jessica Parker is an outspoken fan of ballet, so maybe she could work some magic here. Disney’s Hocus Pocus would be a goofy romp of a dance production or a delightfully wicked musical. It was directed by Kenny Ortega, after all!
4) Text: Carrie (1976) Okay, we know what you’re thinking. But let the special-effects team do what they do best, and just picture the modern or contemporary choreography that could bring this cult classic, adapted from Stephen King’s 1974 novel, to life onstage. We already know how powerful a mode of expression movement can be. If Carrie could have studied at the Martha Graham School, we think she would have.

🥹If you watched portions of last night’s @DancingWithTheStars episode through a film of welling tears, you’re not alone.

Dedication Night is always emotional, and this season’s edition made good on that promise. It’s also often a turning point for competitors as they give themselves fully to their performances.

But it wouldn’t be reality television without a few curveballs, would it?👀

Living with a dancer means accepting that bobby pins, tights, and random costume pieces are just part of the decor! 🪩💖

Audio Description: La La Land Theme
Visual: Empty living room with no dancer, dancer suddenly appears. Empty floor with magazine, remote and snacks transforms to having massage tools, therabands, rollers and other dance products covering it. Closet full of normal clothes transforms to be only leotards hanging. Hallway with casual shoes transforms to have dance shoes scattered all around. Empty desk with notebook and pens transforms to become a hair and makeup vanity with a laptop playing Dance Moms. Text reads “Life with a dancer.” by @dancespiritmagazine

🫨Does the adrenaline rush you feel before a performance help or hurt you? A surge of #adrenaline is a natural response in high-stakes situations, whether it’s an audition, a performance, or a competition.

🩰At @HoustonBalletAcademy, a little more than half of the students say that adrenaline usually enhances their dancing, helping them feel more alert, present, and grounded.

But a sizable minority typically reports that adrenaline has a negative impact, causing symptoms like tunnel vision, shakiness, and trouble balancing.

While the physical manifestations of adrenaline can make some dancers feel out of control or panicked, they can also sharpen focus and add energy and excitement to a performance.

So how do you become the kind of dancer who feeds off of adrenaline rather than fears it?💭

🏈On Super Bowl Night, @DancingWithTheStars delivered its share of hustles, flags, fumbles, and touchdowns in true fashion.

The night, themed around iconic Super Bowl halftime performances, included some notable appearances by former NFL-player “DWTS” alumni, as well as by guest judge and sportscaster, @JoeBuck.

🩰As you stand on #pointe, do you feel the sides of your feet sinking down or rubbing against the inside of the shoe? 👀

If you use your fingers to press down on the shoe’s platform, is it firm, or does it squish down? 👀

Do your big or little toes bulge out in the satin, or do your knuckles pop over the top of the vamp? 👀

☠️These are just a few signs of a dead pointe shoe.

Maya asked what to look for in a pair of #PointeShoes, and DS answered.

When you’re feeling GOOD about the choreo...and then the choreographer starts to film, and suddenly you’ve never danced a day in your life!

Dancers, are you camera shy or do you thrive when the camera comes out? 👀👇

💸Let’s face it: #Dance can be expensive. In some cases, an hour of work at the U.S. median wage rate may barely cover a single class, let alone the costume fees, shoes, travel, and other costs that serious training demands. That price of admission shuts out many talented and passionate students from chasing their dreams.

Addressing that problem might sound like a job for adults with deep pockets and years of industry experience. But some teenage dancers have proven that with help, age is no obstacle, founding their own nonprofit organizations to make dance more accessible in their communities💖

✨Meet Abigail Pravinata of @_developpe_, Isabella Addison Perrone of En Pointe Bels, and Aubrey Sheldon of DanceStudioDirect.

These students work to offset the cost of dance with offerings like free classes, donated dancewear, and subscription boxes, helping make room for more dancers across the U.S. who couldn’t otherwise afford a place in the studio.
