World Mental Health Day: Black and Well Recap 🌍🖤🥳I’m in my third year of grad school era, and it is filled with love. Captured here are images that feature love for Self, community, and Black well-being.🌱This event began as a mustard seed of an idea I had in July that blossomed into a beautiful partnership with @prccrutgers.Our goal? Hey Community🖤*long post, s/o to the ones who read it all🎓I’m Zina, someone who’s working towards my doctorate (PsyD) degree in community psychology with a focus on embodied somatic movement ( aka dance, yoga, meditation, etc.)📚Community psych is a field of study that centers population-wide well-being. We care about advocating for change in the systems that impact your health just as much as we care about nurturing your well-being in the therapy room.📚When entering academic spaces, I found myself hesitant to share my dance/choreography videos on YouTube, constantly editing what I posted on LinkedIn…& ultimately “getting got” by internalized oppression😮‍💨. This is that voice in our heads that tells us:Let me not be: “too Black”“too culturally expressive”“too me”I’m showing you this part of the journey because: 1) A lot of you may not have known what community psych is 2) Maybe you want to explore it as a career option 3) Being authentic attracts our people…maybe you’ve had challenges with this too. Take steps to be who you want to be anyways.Reflections:💭 What helps you avoid the pressure to conform in professional spaces when tempted?💭How do you feel about code-switching or maybe even community psych?💭 Place a 💚 if you agree or a ❓if you think there’s something I left out.Drop your thoughts in the comments.
