DANCING QUEENS × AFRICA OYÉ

One of our most powerful moments — bringing Carnival to Africa Oyé with the amazing Katumba. 🥁💃🏾

Carnival is more than celebration.
It is resistance, joy, and visibility.

As African and Caribbean women and children we took up space, moved together, and celebrated our culture, our histories, and our sisterhood. In the park, we made it clear: we belong here.

This is the first in a series of short films sharing movements of our journey as Dancing Queens.

None of this happens alone.

With support from The Women’s Fund at Community Foundation for Merseyside and our partners — @rjcdance @rkm_mangoarts , @africaoye Oyé, Black Women’s Health Forum, @africancaribbeancentrel8 Caribbean Centre, @theblack_e_liv , @katumbadrummingmovement Katumba @altar.of.ego @stray.snaps @global_grooves plus our artists, crew, and every Dancing Queen who showed up and danced with us. ❤️

What if joy wasn’t the reward at the end of the work — but the foundation?

That’s the thinking behind Joyful Journeys.

For more than 20 years, I’ve been creating spaces where people can move, make, perform, connect, learn, belong and experience JOY 🤩

I’ve seen women step onto stages they never imagined themselves standing on.
I’ve seen generations create together.
I’ve seen culture celebrated through dance, carnival, music and storytelling.
I’ve seen what happens when people are given the space, support and permission to be creative and free.

Joyful Journeys brings this work together.

Creativity. Culture. Education. Coaching. Wellbeing.

From Dancing Queens to Circle of Joy, Joyful Yoga, Joyful Minds and Healing Hubs, we’re creating experiences that help people connect with themselves, each other and their communities.

Reliving all the goodness from Africa Oyé and the @dancingqueenswerise Carnival Troupe! ☀️✨

While cities across England come alive with Caribbean carnival this weekend — from @leedswestindiancarnival to @nhcarnivalldn — Dancing Queens are bringing that carnival spirit to Liverpool! ✨

This year, we’re joining our amazing friends @katumbadrummingmovement @saverauk for Culture is Beautiful — a celebration of culture, community and standing together against honour-based violence (HBV) towards women and girls.

We’re excited to welcome @dancingqueenswerise to this year’s “March to End HBA” and our festival of culture.

An award-winning intergenerational dance, wellbeing and carnival collective, artistically directed by Ithalia Johnson (@ithaliaj), the project started with an invite from the Black Women's Health Forum to create a space for improving the health and wellbeing of Black women and has grown from there!

They’ll be bringing African and Caribbean dance, music, creativity and cultural celebration all guided by the ethos "I Rise. You Rise. We Rise."

The last summer session for @dancingqueenswerise was so uplifting. Thank you @julianabrazilmovement @katumbadrummingmovement for sharing your knowledge and culture of Afro Brazilian dance and drumming. We danced learning the links between different Orixas and how they link with Maracatu movement and dance. The original of the dance and how it is rooted with our ancestors and resistance “King and Queen of Congo” and how this traveled to South America. We danced, we sang, we drummed. We cannot wait to create more magic together. Classes are on a break but you can catch us @saverauk event on 29th August with our wonderful friends @katumbadrummingmovement and on the 25 August with the amazing @kaos_ankrah and Decks in the city for a family day @victoriagallery more details to follow 🧡🧡🧡🌻🌻🌻 taken in African Caribbean Centre Liverpool by @dancingqueenswerise

Join us for a beautiful Afro-Brazilian Maracatu Dance & Song Session with @julianabrazilmovement @katumbadrummingmovement @ithaliaj

Juliana will lead us to explore the powerful rhythms, songs and movements of Maracatu, learn about the Orishas, and experience the joy and spirit of Afro Brazilian Carnival.

💛 This is our final weekly class before we pause to plan and fundraise, so we can keep Dancing Queens free for African & Caribbean women.
