Early June always gets me thinking about hunting migratory striped bass up in Cape Cod.

Oil pastel on Canson paper.

My favorite bird of prey. The American Kestrel. These little birds are so amazing! Oil Pastel on Canson paper.

Leon’s spot. Cape Cod. Oil pastel sketch.

So, I don’t really like how dusty soft pastels can get, but I do like the compact nature of them as a medium. Also, I want something I can use in my office that won’t make a total mess for those times I don’t feel like painting larger format down in the basement. Enter oil pastels. This was my first try with oil pastels and I think I really like them!

The little tarpon sketch sat on my desk for at least 4 years. It was time make something happen with it. I learned a lot on this piece. I’ll likely want to do it again someday soon. #acrylicpainting #tarpon #tarponfishing by @dandow_art

Pretty much always thinking about jumping tarpon in the Keys. Soft pastel on paper.

While visiting Scotland last year, I found an amazing Scottish landscape artist named Fiona Haldane. Fiona works in pastels, which I hadn’t ever considered using. Seeing her art drove me to purchase my first set of soft pastels to try out. It’s different in a good way.

This is my first attempt at using them. It’s a favorite bend on New York’s Salmon River in mid fall. I’m not thrilled with it. But, it gave me a fun intro to the medium.

The now infamous incomplete Smallmouth Bass. I STOPPED working on this piece in 2021 and it still sits unfinished today. He’s completely missing a pec fin, and lacks detail on all of the others. Maybe one day I’ll finish it. Or maybe I’ll start over. Who knows.

Swipe left to see the process I took for this one. This is the 17th hole at Mt. Airy Golf Club. We had a really fun round this day and this picture was snapped as we came down the home stretch. I liked it so much, I painted it, framed it, and gave it to my best friend Dan.

A quick desktop sketch I did after coming across a really cool baby tarpon photo online.

This painting was my first dabble into painting with acrylics. There are some things I like about this painting, others are rough. I do love how the egret came out, though.
I’m not sure where the original reference photo came from, but it reminds me so much of my favorite fishing spot just outside of Miami. I’d spend hours upon hours alone in the mangroves with the fish, birds, and the occasional manatee or turtle.

Probably my favorite of the little oil paintings I’ve done. It’s only a small 8x10 canvas board. Not sure why I like it so much. I think it’s the warm glowy vibes of it.
