A post-script to my “Last week in Toronto sports” post. No doubt, one of the best things to happen after a “rivalry night” hockey game.

I mean, this felt so good (so good…so good…so good…).

My “Highlight of The Night” from last Monday: Taking my mom, my uncles and my aunts around the workplace for a little tour — sadly, minus my dad, because he’s not too comfortable with long walks anymore. Really meant a lot to me, especially having at least one of my parents around to see first-hand the kind of place (and the industry itself) I have ALWAYS dreamed of working in ever since I was a kid. by @danetogo

It was @oshawageneralsohl Country Night…someone had to rep the cowboy hat giveaway in the TV truck. 😁

Great to be back for another season (my 16th — and 11th as director). A “director reel” for this game, still to come. YEEEEEE-HAW!

Turns out, I have to share this separately because adding this in a “carousel” post doesn’t show the entire duration of the video.

From my lunch at Osteria Pastella: The making of their signature “Tagliatelle flambé al tartufo fresco in crosta di Grana Padano” — flambéed tagliatelle (made fresh in-house) tossed in a giant wheel of Grana Padano cheese, topped with fresh truffle. I call it pure deliciousness.

Enjoy 3 1/2 minutes of bliss right here. 😁 by @danetogo

Last full day in Florence + last full day of summer

This was pretty much the only thing I had on a fixed schedule that day: Lunch at Osteria Pastella, near the Santa Maria Novella train station. And I arrived late because the bus schedules just f’d me over — apparently, buses not following the schedules are a common thing in Italy…

Went to Osteria Pastella specifically for this: Their truffle and Grana Padano cheese pasta — fresh, house-made tagliatelle, with the sauce made right in front of you on a ginormous cheese wheel. (Will share a video on a separate post because, apparently, the entire 3 minutes of it isn’t shown on a “carousel” post like this.)

I mean, COME ON. Isn’t that beautiful?

The “secondi” (“second main course” — more protein-focused, if you will) was nothing to sneeze at, either — their meat cut of the day, slow-cooked and smoked over charcoal (that day, it was sheep — this looked more like a “kebab” shape to me), spread with herbs, garlic and anchovies and served over a potato-onion mash

Then, got my steps in under the Tuscan afternoon heat…and made my way to Ponte Vecchio

Taking in Monday afternoon on Piazza della Signoria…I know, it’s a tourist spot…but also, it was still a Monday afternoon. The vibe is just fascinating.

The early part of the evening on Day 7 of my Florence trip was devoted to…finally, Piazzale Michelangelo. It’s a 19th-century square built on a hill in the Oltrarno district, south of the historic centre (and across the Arno River), which became known for its panoramic views of Florence, especially come sunset.

And, yes, tourist-y as it is, the views and the vibe were amazing.

Trying to get a bus back, though, was…a bit of a different story (waited about an hour, I think). 😕 by @danetogo

Another must-see in Florence: the Galleria dell’Academia di Firenze. Home to Michaelangelo’s David statue. But there’s a lot more to see…like the Museum of Musical Instruments, a collection of various musical instruments dating back from the Renaissance. And the Gipsoteca, the plaster cast gallery of artists Lorenzo Bartolini and Luigi Pampaloni.

But of course, the David is, and will always be, the “pièce de résistance” of the museum.

The unwritten rule with visiting such museums: Advance tickets, always. And a “skip the line” kind of pass, too, if you can (and many tour companies or tour apps offer that). by @danetogo

This was one of my most favourite parts of my Italy trip: The Bologna food tour.

Again, this started off quite early in the morning from Florence, where I took a high-speed train (which was included in the tour package I got) from the Santa Maria Novella station to Bologna Centrale. Imagine, over 120 km in just 45 minutes, with the train going as fast as 245 kph — it was basically just the next stop. (Canada, honestly, we HAVE to step up here.)

From the Bologna Centrale station, I figured out public transit (thank you, Google Maps) to get to the tour’s meeting place, by the statue of Neptune on Piazza Maggiore, the biggest piazza in the city. From there, we walked — and ate — our way around town. And it took us well into lunchtime. by @danetogo

Day 5: Another day, another day trip — but this time, a little further away.

From Florence, I took on a tour of 4 out of the 5 villages of Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Ligurian region, on the northwest side of Italy. Started out in Vernazza, then to Manarola, then to Riomaggiore, and ended at Monterosso al Mare. All by the sea, all beautiful.

And, goes without saying, 20 pics aren’t enough to sum it all up. by @danetogo

Still from Day 4 of the Florence (and then some) vacation: Pisa.

This was the final stop of the day trip that, as in my previous post, included Siena and San Gimignano (which sadly, got rained out). Our tour group walked to the Piazza del Duomo, where, of course, the highlight was the Leaning Tower — but I did not purchase an additional ticket for it, so I stayed outside, and took some pics anyway. And also watched as some people made their craziest poses with the tower, because…well…it IS the Leaning Tower, after all. I also checked out the Cathedral, which was unfortunately closed to the public as there was an orchestra rehearsing.

After that, we rode into the sunset on an hour-long (or so) drive back to Florence. A long day, and at one point, an absolutely wet and soggy one…but it was amazing. by @danetogo

Day 4 of the Florence trip actually had me out of Florence for the whole day…

My excursion/day trip started in Siena, touring the historic centre, as well as Siena’s Duomo cathedral.

Then it was off to lunch and wine tasting at Azienda Agricola San Quirico, a winery in San Gimignano. Mother Nature would send some rain just as we left the winery for the city centre of San Gimignano…so much that, unfortunately, some of us in the tour bus just decided to stay inside the whole time (yet another reason to come back to that part of Italy some time). by @danetogo

Biggest highlight of Day 3 in Florence: A cooking class. But it wasn’t just any cooking class — it was a cooking class with a view. And man, the view was SPECTACULAR, the pics and video don’t give it enough justice.

My classmates and I learned how to make bruschetta, tiramisu, and pasta...and the best part was, we not only got to share the spread at the end of the class, but we got to share it amidst a beautiful Florence skyline. The wine was overflowing, and so was the conversation — and, I must say, I met such an amazing group of people (there were three of us Canadians, too).

The experience and the food was well worth it.

By the way, after dinner at the cooking class, some of us in the class checked out one of the “wine windows” nearby, where the conversations continued well until after sunset. I thought that was pretty awesome, too. by @danetogo
