It was 1972 when I read a big book of Gerald Scarfe drawings. By that time he was a war cartoonist traveling from war to war around the world. His drawings showed how dramatic wars are. He also drawed politics of that time.
I was 16 and I enjoyed to draw with passion under his powerful influence.
On that year, applying for a scholarship I presented about half a dozen of those drawings among others works. I got the scholarship but I received back the envelope with the drawings because they didn't considered them since they founded them too much dramatic.
On 1983 I was traveling in Europe and I knew there was and exposition of Gerald in Bristol, England, so I went to see his work. I loved his drawings and also I founded that he worked on big sculptures as well. There I saw directly the originals that I already remembered from his book.
He presented sculptures of Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan as a cowboy with bombs on his cartridge belt and I guess it was prince Edward with a big red tongue as a carpet crossing the room. Among the drawings there was one of a pretty tiny flower that he made on demand of a lady that asked him if he never drawed something nice.
I present here two of my drawings notoriously influenced by Scarfe. The second one tried to be a USA president and then a mask sculpted before knowing he became a sculptor.
I would like to see all his first drawings again here on Instagram, since most of his drawings here refer to the era of Pink Floyd film The Wall.
