Doing weekend repair clinics over the winter starting this October until February, I’ll provide the canoe, ama, materials and gloves. Mistakes will be made! Sothat is why I’m being a canoe and ama to learn on! All part of the process! Respirators, tyvek suits, earplugs, safety glasses must be purchased by attendees and brought to the clinic. There will be a heavy emphasis on application of paint for minor ding repair and polishing of paint and gelcoat. #composite #outriggercanoe # by @danhund_

I spent the weekend camping and paddling off the coast of beautiful Vancouver Island on a remote island, home of the Namgis Nation in Alert Bay with my loving wife of six years and my amazing stepson, got in some good quality time to catch up with him. If Kai hadn’t taught me how to do repairs, I wouldn’t have met my wife when she needed a repair 10 years ago. I am so grateful. Kai, Thank you.

When I lived in Maui I had no immediate family,I didn’t paddle for the first couple years,I had a small handful of friends that I still have to this day.Paddling is social.Prior to Maui I spent the first years in my 20’s and 30’s only knowing how to work and not socialize, I wasn’t allowed to by my ex wife. After divorce, she moved to Maui as did I to be near my kids, by that time I was in the beginning stages of debilitating financial obligation and what I know now as cptsd. I couldn’t handle conflict. From 2011 -2014 I worked for Kai and was lucky to be able to find my place in the shop where I worked mostly alone or one on one with him, even though it was the dirty work, building rudders, drain covers, cutting seams, gel coating molds,doing repair’s, I was able to do what my nervous system could handle and keep my bills paid so I could see my kids on the weekend. I wasn’t really one of the boys, I was the guy that came in, put his mask on, and went into the spray room or grinding room. The canoe shop was the only stable, predictable centre I had in Hawaii. Kai, Thank you.

I got into paddling in 2013 by Kai, Will, Ashley, and Uncle Kimokeo. I left to be near my kids in WA state, the years passed and Kai always vouched for me as long as he could, I lost my mind in 2019, the relational trauma with my ex wife and kids broke me. I was in pieces. If it wasn’t for paddling, learning how to pull forward inch by inch out of grief and pain, I would not be here. Kai, Thank you.

I got to spend the day cleaning up after camping, getting things sorted and put away, then load my canoe and do a downwind with friends and enjoy the surf together. So many friends that I cherish. Kai Bartlett led with strength, aloha, and kindness and I will honour him by doing the same. RIPKB 🌸 by @danhund_
