A little acoustic snippet of I Wake. This is a break up song. Specifically, that moment you wake up and all the realities come crashing back to you. Know what I mean?#songwriter #altfolk #indie by @dani_larkin_

‘And what is there to offer? When the wax has waned? And the prophets, proffered, in whose only name?’A break up song for all the ages. I went full big production for I Wake and while I thought 6mins was maybe too long for a break up song I indulged my heart on sleeve sensibilities and kept the full thing on the record rather than opting for a radio edit.Think Sinead O’Connor meets Dolores O’Riordan on the vocals at the end.I Wake marks the end of the darkest tracks on Next Of Kin. We move into something else entirely in track five. Ps that radio edit still exists, dm me if you fancy a digital copy.#songwriter #indie #ireland DLx by @dani_larkin_

My favourite thing about working on She Moved Through The Fair was the sheer unexpectedness of it all.It arrived fully formed after I was asked to audition for a part in a movie that I never got. What you hear on the record is the first and only take. No overdubs. That’s why it feels so raw. There’s also an element of time travel with the field recording from Nablus, P@lestine.Context is everything. The queer retelling comes from the collaboration with @christophermcauley__ who is as delightful as he is talented.Go check it out x#songwriter #folk #fieldrecording 🎥 @wearefactory61 by @dani_larkin_

'End Of It All' came from an apocalyptic dream that I had in April 2023. An imagining of what the end of the world would look like.In October 2023 the current genocide in Palestine began. The 'Row Your Boat' backing vocals are a testament to those who flee their homes in search of safety and a note on the loss of innocence and childhood in war. It's the second track on Next Of Kin. Come listen to how we turn a backing vocal into the main feature of a song. We're on tour across Europe, England and a few home shows finishing in Belfast on the 15th November.www.danilarkin.com/tourThe darkest moment is always before dawn.#songwriter #belfast #dawn by @dani_larkin_

Music is my first love and finding ways to communicate the political science side of my brain through sound is something I’ve really enjoyed doing in Next Of Kin. Cue End Of It All, Morning and She Moved Through The Fair to hear what I mean.Belfast has become more than a home for me over the years. It’s a place that’s become community, friendship, solidarity and love.My only Belfast show this year will be on the 15th November. It’s an All Ages, BYOB show because we need more young people at gigs and paying £6 for a pint is outrageous.Tickets at the link in bio, more to come, and as the captions clearly say, Salon!DLx#songwriter #belfast #folk by @dani_larkin_

Next Of Kin is about finding your people in times of grief and fear. Maybe that’s you? It’s definitely me right now. I’m starting a Patreon, with free and paid tiers, so I can create more of a conversation and community around my music. A meaningful connection rather than the quick scroll of social media.I’ll be launching this Friday 2nd July with a full acoustic version of Next Of Kin. It won’t be available anywhere else. There’s an early sign up link in my bio if this sounds like your thing.See you in a new way this Friday,DLx by @dani_larkin_

Ma’Alesh: Mutarazat al Salam x Lou McGowanTen Palestinian embroiderers and an Irish tailor transform pain into art. Their soft textiles of linen, cotton and sheep’s wool carry messages of truth. Each piece tells a story - the story of those who document truth courageously in the darkest times. An honour to work on the sound design for the opening of Ma’Alesh, Threads of Truth Through Palestinian embroidery, in Jordan last week.My Arabic is limited to shukran with the odd habibi thrown in there. Instead of following a translated transcript I started the sound design from a place of responding to the women’s voices. Their tone, their laughter, their sorrow, their joy.If you’re an artist, curator, festival or community space interested in showcasing this work drop me a line.If you’re interested in the sound design process drop a question in the comments below.——————————————————————————Mutarazat al Salam is a collective of Palestinian embroiderers based in Gaza Refugee Camp, Jerash, Jordan whose work centres on Palestinian identity and cultural preservation through art.Lou McGowan is an Irish tailor-artist, community worker and researcher born and raised in Belfast. Her practice engages with issues of power, violence and truth-telling.#sounddesign #art #resistance by @dani_larkin_
