It’s being a month since we finish the @wildlands.studies Belize Summer Program. It was a fantastic journey through caves, rainforest, rivers, coral reefs, mangroves and savannas, meeting inspiring people, leading an awesome group of students, discovering new places and getting to see for the first time gorgeous new birds, fishes, frogs, snakes and insects.

Very grateful to these young people that decided to join this crazy learning adventure 🙏 by @danicouceiro21

“Hay un momento en el que el silencio del bosque cobra vida.
Un destello entre las hojas, un canto que rompe el aire. El avistamiento de aves es más que observar,
es conectarse con la naturaleza en su estado más puro.

A new way of exploring Colombia is arising. A way that takes you hand by hand with the Indigenous People of Colombia to discover the ancient and alive cultures that still call this land their home. The wisdom, the understanding of the world and the vision of life of the Wiwas, Kogis, Misaq, Nasa and so many others are just different. They are still connected with the land in ways that western cultures have lost a long time ago.

They still carry that old, nature-based knowledge that makes them the guardians of the majority of the most biodiverse places on Earth. For so long. And hopefully it keeps being this way.

Now, the Indigenous People from Colombia are still fighting for their lands, resources and present. They also want to thrive in this fast changing world, and they want to embrace the possibility of sharing with the world their traditions, wisdom and understanding. Through @turismoindigenacol , people can experience first hand what does this mean. by @danicouceiro21

A couple of weeks ago I finished leading my second course with @wildlands.studies . This time was in New Zealand, a special, different and reeeeally interesting land no matter how you look at it. I had a blast going around with this awesome group of smart, kind and talented group of young people all learning together about ecology, restoration, birds, braided rivers and lots of other aspects of conservation biology.
But the best without a doubt was to feel that with people like these young guys, there is hope to take care of our lands, rivers and oceans. Very grateful to meet you all and specially to @tyee.sol and @carolineqkane to be the best work team and support I could ask for! by @danicouceiro21

Wherever it is that the mountains meet the ocean, I’m home. By the river, by the sea, by the forest or the peak. What else. by @danicouceiro21

During my last trip to Bulgaria with environmental sciences students, I realized about how wicked our relationship with nature has become.

We talked so much about the conflict human- predator and how to manage it, we discussed about how to restore ecosystems and how to preserve certain key species and habitats specially in the light of climate change.

It is very interesting to see how around conservation Nature has become a market, a service provider, something that we value based on what she gives to us, on how much money we can make out of her, and how nature conflicts are handled based on economic terms.

We think we need to “manage” Nature so she can thrive. This speaks so loud about our ignorance about how Nature works. This has gone the point that we collect terms as ecosystem services, nature based solutions and other fancy stuff while we develop twisted ways to keep extracting from it and justify our actions, like carbon credits. That’s how we “manage” Nature.

The truth is, does Nature need management? Or maybe it’s us the ones who need to be managed, our perspectives challenged and the current model questioned and changed?

I wonder that every time I’m home in the forest, in the beach, in the river, in the mountains. by @danicouceiro21

First @wildlands.studies Bulgaria program completed!! For two weeks, I had the pleasure to lead this amazing group of U.S. university students throughout Bulgaria while we studied the human wildlife conflict across the country, deepened into the possibilities of rewilding and ecological restoration and backpacked through the mighty Pirin mountains.

Of course, we had tons of fun, laughter, jokes and a very nurturing life experience for everybody!

Thank you for being such a beautiful group of people, all of you 🙏 See you soon team!! by @danicouceiro21

Celebrating this 2024Global Big Day of Birds with a reeeeally cool birdwatching in La Guajira with @cerrejoncolombia and a bunch of very nice people.
I love to come to the dry tropical forest, it’s an intense, extremely hot and very rich ecosystem of which just a few small patches remain intact. It was very interesting to discuss possible solutions for its regeneration hand by hand with the Wayuu people and other conservationist from the country.
Thanks Diana @piluck23 for the invitation!

Yep. Always in nature. As much as I can. That’s where we belong. That’s where we have evolved for thousands of years. That is the truth. That’s where we feel good. That’s why people scape from concrete worlds in their holidays. That’s why we go for walks to the park. Cause it feels home.
That’s why I am always there, sharing with people stories about birds, the land, the insects, the fruits. That’s life for me.

Lately my whole world goes around birds. When I take people to the forest to birdwatching, everybody forgets about their problems, their thoughts and concerns.

People just connect with our feathery friends, and bond a bit more with the land, wherever it is. People listen to them, and wonder why are they are every day listening to cars instead of birds. People see birds eating seeds and they understand that the forest stands and expands thanks to them. Birds connect people with the real world. Just go out and see it by yourself. by @danicouceiro21

We keep diving deep in the territory, in the stories that this gorgeous land has to say. Together with @wiwatour we went this time to the amazing Santuario de Flora y Fauna Los Flamencos so we could explore the particular birds of the tropical dry forest on the transition towards the desert of La Guajira.

This group of kids will soon become the first indigenous birdwatching guides that can share the old stories of this land that the birds carry. Little by little. Connecting with the territory story by story, bird by bird. by @danicouceiro21
