👏Congratulations to @daniel.bjarnason on the success of his new secular oratorio, Passion of the Common Man, which premiered at @bregenzerfestspiele.

Composed for four soloists, choir, and chamber orchestra, the work explores our need for empathy in a futuristic world. In this world, medicine makes physical and psychological pain disappear, affection is simulated by algorithms, and global crises make us mentally numb. The work confronts the audience with a haunting and powerful reflection on humanity.

Performed by @emma.kajander (soprano), @vonotter (mezzo-soprano), @aarongodfreymayes (tenor), @jimbrailo (baritone), The Bavarian Radio Chorus / Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, and @symphonieorchester_vorarlberg.

Commissioned by @bregenzerfestspiele, libretto by @rvavrek, and sound design and electronics by @knackered.xyz.

Nærmynd draaide niet alleen om muziek, maar ook om de manier waarop we luisteren.

Als associate artist gebruikte Hildur Guðnadóttir (@hildur_gudnadottir) het festival om aandacht te vragen voor een vorm van luisteren die verder gaat dan alleen horen: open, onbevooroordeeld en met ruimte voor de ander. In Het Concertgebouw (@concertgebouw) kwam dat samen in een programma met haar eigen werk en muziek van componisten die haar inspireren, uitgevoerd door het Iceland Symphony Orchestra (@icelandsymphony) en dirigent Daníel Bjarnason (@daniel.bjarnason).

Daníel Bjarnason hefur verið ráðinn í starf listræns ráðgjafa hjá Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands.
Daníel er tónskáld og hljómsveitarstjóri sem hefur starfað á alþjóðlegum vettvangi og unnið með leiðandi hljómsveitum og listafólki víða um heim. Hann hefur um árabil átt náið samstarf við Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands, m.a. sem hljómsveitarstjóri, staðarlistamaður, aðalgestastjórnandi og nú sem listamaður í samstarfi.

Daníel Bjarnason has been appointed as Artistic Advisor to the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.
Daníel is a composer and conductor who has worked internationally and collaborated with leading orchestras and artists around the world. Over gisteravond… 🎶

Hildur Guðnadóttir (@hildur_gudnadottir) en het Iceland Symphony Orchestra (@icelandsymphony) namen gisteravond Het Concertgebouw over voor Nærmynd, met fragmenten uit Joker, TÁR, A Haunting in Venice, nieuwe composities en werken van Arvo Pärt, Ryuichi Sakamoto en Kaija Saariaho, onder leiding van Daníel Bjarnason (@daniel.bjarnason).

Als deze beelden je het gevoel geven dat je erbij had willen zijn, dat kan nog! Hildur is nog drie keer te zien tijdens het Holland Festival met Chernobyl in de Gashouder en Passing Remark in het Westerpark.

The soundtrack to The Last Whale Singer is finally out.

This project has been a true labor of love over many years. Working with Reza Memari and the entire team at Telescope Animation⁠, we built this world from the earliest piano sketches and beat boards all the way to the finished film. Animated films take a long time to make, and it was a privilege to be part of the process almost from the very beginning.

My deepest thanks to all my fellow travellers on this journey, especially Viktor Orri Árnason, who was my right hand throughout the process.

Thanks to Ásgeir for lending his voice to Vincent and for creating the beautiful title song. Thanks to Unnsteinn for singing Humphrey and to my son Bjarni for singing Baby Vincent and for patiently accompanying me to the recording sessions in Prague.

Thanks to the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and everyone at Smecky Music Studios for their wonderful work. Thanks Bergur for mixing and mastering. Thanks Frej for helping out when most needed.

And, of course, the biggest thanks of all to Reza Memari for bringing me along on this adventure and to the many others whose contributions helped bring this score to life.
