POSTS STORIES REELS

I'm very proud that my work was up at the Dog and Bone gallery in Brighton this Halloween.

I have been making hands out of masking tape as an extension of my Numinous project since April, generally in public. I have been making Any Bright Ideas paintings for a year, definitely not in public.

Head Hats are also constructed using masking tape, I worked out how to do it in 2021 and have adopted it as my main medium since then.

Thanks to Amber for curating this space! by @daniel.petley

Join us this Friday afternoon upstairs in Eastgate Shopping Centre for the Closing Ceremony of Dan Petley’s SURROGATE. The artist himself alongside Meanwhile Resident Dan Cooper plus friends and special guests will be performing extended psychedelic and ambient experimental soundscapes to see things out in a haze of profound wonder and subtle chaos, perfectly in tune with the process of Dan’s SURROGATE project. by @daniel.petley

Go and see my installation at Meanwhile Gloucester, the art space upstairs in Eastgate Shopping Centre.

It's free to access every day until mid October with a closing party on Friday 16th.

In this project, started in January 2023, a dialectical process creates a physical and experiential representation of a baby. Exploring issues relating to perceptions of parenting for the childless.

I developed the Surrogate project through talking with Gen-Xers and Millennials about changing attitudes towards parenting over the last half century, resulting in a collaborative process working towards a physical representation of an absent, aspirational familial connection. The resulting finished piece is looked after and displayed in the home of the parent, not as a resolution but an acknowledgement that some emotional progress has been made.

This is the third piece in my Surrogate series. The baby is called Paul, and the parent is Glen. We worked together on this project from February to October 2025.

The Rules

– When a client requests for a baby to be made, I’m paid 50% on “conception” and 50% on “delivery”.

– During the gestation period I discuss the baby’s features with the couple or single parent via words and photographs through direct messages on WhatsApp.

– After delivery the baby is presented to their new family, who become guardians.

– This baby is more than a unique commodity of visual art and cannot be exhibited in a museum setting, only documentation such as images and films of the process can be shown. Each baby has a Gif made for them specifically to represent them in a gallery setting.

– Therefore, the baby can’t enter a secondary market following delivery.

– Throughout the whole process the parent can have as much involvement as they like but must accept that some changes will occur naturally.

– I can only create one baby at a time. by @daniel.petley

My work is in Dog & Bone Gallery in Brighton throughout October. I've been making hands out of masking tape as an extension of my Numinous project since April, generally in public. I've been making Any Bright Ideas paintings for a year, definitely not in public.

Hats off to Amber for curating this space. by @daniel.petley

I'm so proud of what my band Tosstool achieved in 2005. A variety of styles played in a raw, abrasive style, always threatening to slip but somehow managing to stay on the tracks. Wish I could still do this with my voice. Maybe I can?! by @daniel.petley

For some time now I've been making hand sculptures out of masking tape and newspaper then sealing them with plaster. I'll be exhibiting these in @dogandbonegallery in Brighton throughout October. by @daniel.petley

Work-in-progress shots of Artists Showcase Window at Sparks in Bristol city centre.
I curated the space to show the work of 20 artists working outside of studios and using their own homes as spaces to shape and express reality.
The resulting exhibition uses this vast space to celebrate a positive rejection of the financial and cultural barriers that limit opportunities for this work to be seen.
Through residencies and workshops, the public can experience, share and make alongside the artists.
The windows are ready to be marvelled at by the public now, more posts to follow!
