“My sister Kim, by the shore.”
3 ft. x 2.5 ft
Walnut ink and commercial Ink on paper

A portrait of my dear sister Kim, who has served as a great inspiration to me since we were children. A true trail blazer, and has always stood with courage before the great unknown.

This painting is about transitions, reaching the end of a chapter and the start of a next.

_ I am very pleased to present my 7th ceramic vessel made under the guidance of my uncle. For the glazing, I wanted it to feel both from antiquity and otherworldly. For its silhouette, I took inspiration from a tiny, ancient Judean jug that was gifted to my grandmother in 1988.

She had an incredible collection of eclectic objects in her home. It took years before I realized, for her they were an extension of journal keeping. Every item had a story; “oh this was given to me by my friend so and so, in 19-something”… decorating her world with fond memories and loved ones.

One day, I asked her if she had anything ancient; she paused for a moment… and said she wasn’t sure. A week or two later when I visited again, she sat up in her chair excited, saying she remembered- that she did in fact have something more than a thousand years old- she pointed up to a little vitrine high on the den bookshelf.

It reminded me of the climactic scene in the third Indiana Jones movie, where they must identify the Holy Grail in a room of gilded and jeweled cups- “it would be simple…” says Indie, as he holds the most modest one in his hands.

The little Judean jug would be among the items she’d leave me after she passed 4 years ago. by @daniel_davidowitz
