Boston šŸ¦„ 2:48:45
London šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§ 3:00:58

These races were special. I’m proud of these races.

I found something new in myself on the way to Boylston St and held it with me through the streets of London. I remembered that I get to choose how I run, how I race: am I running against the clock, or am I running to see what I can do while the clock runs?

In the time it took me to run from Hopkinton to Boston, I found a new kind of confidence in my running and unlocked the ability to pull myself out of a deep mental cave. I found that the training I’ve been done is available to me when I call on it, even when I’m tired.

In the time it took me to run from Greenwich to Westminster, I found a new kind of joy on the run. I found the people that make this sport so fun. I found the celebration that makes race day a victory lap, whether you’re running under 2 hours or walking at mile 2.

I’m leaving this season with an abundance of gratitude - for myself and this body that lets me do INSANE things. For my friends who pressure me and facilitate insane things. For my coach @lisbethh.jennings for signing off on and believing that I can do insane things.

At the end of the day, I’ll probably forget how fast I ran or the stats of mile 9, but the people and feelings from these races will stick with me. by @daniel_james87

Saying goodbye to Rosie is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. She taught me presence and patience and she brought joy and light everywhere she went. To anyone who knew Rosie, you knew her unbridled joy and her relentless pursuit of affection. I struggled finding the words all weekend, and I still don’t really have them. All that needs to be said is that I loved Rosie with my whole heart, and she leaves a massive hole.

Thank you to everyone that has reached out over the last few days. Your support has meant the world to me and showed me just how far Rosie reached into the world.

To say I’m grateful is a gross understatement. She was the best dog and she was the best dog for me. I miss her like crazy and I’ll always hold her in my heart šŸ’™ by @daniel_james87

Chicago Marathon, 2:46:25, 7-minute PR

I had no idea what to expect out of this race. I had my goal but didn’t really believe it. Training this summer didn’t click for the longest time, and I didn’t have a ton of confidence coming into the final weeks. I figured I’d get into the race and leave the rest to fate.

A week in the mountains with @luciebeatrix and some expert coaching by @lisbethh.jennings rebuilt my confidence in the best way. It wasn’t chance or fate that got me through the race, it was work and will. I’m proud of the work I put in and proud of what I learned this summer. This one hurt in the best way, and it gives me a new kind of confidence moving forward.

It takes a village and I have a really good one. I shared miles and hit the grind with too many people to thank this block, and a lot of them believed in me long before I could. I couldn’t have gotten this far without all of you, and I wouldn’t want to.

I’m pumped to train for the next one and to take the journey with everyone along the way. Let’s keep this party going all fall šŸ¤˜šŸ¼šŸ”„šŸŗ

ā€œIt’s nice to have someone else recognizing you and saying, ā€˜You can go faster.ā€™ā€

This is @luciebeatrix & @daniel_james87 on @trackclass.

I’ve chatted with Lucie before on Leggggs, and one of my fave takeaways from our conversations is her unabashed and staunch dedication to who she is and how her relationship with running comes to life, especially when it comes to speed.

This is why, when I stumbled upon Track Class, a track-focused fast & inclusive run crew bringing solo runners together to train hard, push limits, and build community—no matter the pace, I had to chat with her again.

While Track Class itself was the brain child of Alli Felsenthal (@runwithalli), Dan and Lucie are spearheading its NYC efforts, and were kind enough to sit down with me to chat about the Class’s impact on the running scene, mission for its students, and vision for the future.

How is Track Class different from a typical track club?

ā€œTracks clubs apply the pressure of having a race as a North Star. But some people aren’t [training for a race] and they don’t want to, and that’s okay. You don’t have to have a race on the books [to be a runner,]ā€ says Lucie.

ā€œYou can just be running to stay in shape mentally and physically, and there’s no pressure. It’s okay to be in a vague base-building period.ā€

Personally, I am most at home in my vague base-building period. So this speaks volumes to me.

This is Track Class on a Conversational Pace for Leggggs.

Change was in the air this June, and most of it for the better. We’re back to naps, racing, and a summer stache. If you need me this summer, you’ll find me in short shorts by the river.

I ran the @orchardstreetrunners Red Hook Race at the end of May, and it was the most fun I’ve had in a race in a long time. It wasn’t my fastest, and I didn’t know many of the people I was racing with, but it piqued my curiosity and prompted me to explore and rediscovering the fun of running this month.

The nature of running makes it easy to get sucked into the weeds of your running metrics (@thedumbrunner has a great comic about this) - heart rate, stride length, elapsed time vs running time… If there’s something to be measured, we have a way to measure it.

RHR was such a blast because I wasn’t measuring anything - I was keyed in to the mile I was running with whoever was there and just kept myself moving. I didn’t even know my finishing time until I was on the subway home. It was such a refreshing departure from normal race stats!

What happens if you simply go for a run or compete in a race? What if you aren’t aware of your heart rate at mile 6 of a marathon? What if you don’t know your mile splits from a 5k, and instead reflect more holistically?

Data has value, but so do experience and sensation. How did the run feel? What did you get from it? I’m looking for balance between the two, and simplifying has been wildly effective for me. Maybe it will for you too.
