What Does a Content Producer Actually Do?
I think we’ve made “content” synonymous with video.
It isn’t.
Content can be:
✍️ Written
📸 Photography
🎥 Video
🎙️ Audio
🎨 Graphics
📚 Books
🎧 Podcasts
📱 Social media
🖥️ Websites
📖 Educational material
The list goes on.
Content is the output. Production is the process.
That distinction matters.
A content producer doesn’t necessarily need to be the best writer, designer, photographer, videographer or sound engineer in the room.
But they do need to understand the difference between those disciplines.
They need to understand these key components:
What are we trying to say?
Who are we saying it to?
What is the best medium for it?
What does it take to produce it properly?
Because not every story needs to be a video.
Sometimes it needs to be a photograph.
Sometimes it needs to be a podcast.
Sometimes it needs to be a graphic.
Sometimes it needs to be a 20-minute film, seven curriculum videos and 1,000 photographs — which is something I experienced working on Nomad Ways.
And sometimes the challenge isn’t creating the content.
It’s getting it shot, edited and delivered before tomorrow morning, like my work on the Arabian Travel Market show dailies.
That’s where I see the role of a content producer.
Understanding the content landscape.
Understanding the production process.
And knowing how to connect the two.
The camera is only one tool.
The real skill is knowing what the story needs.
