Spotting impacts isn't just about looking for splash on steel—it’s about reading the air. If you can see bullet trace (wake), you can spot misses easily and call exact corrections. Here’s how to set up your glass to see it:

1. Own the GTL (Gun Target Line)

The biggest mistake spotters make is setting up too far to the side. You should always try to get directly behind the shooter. If you aren't perfectly aligned with the rifle's barrel, the trace will appear to hook right or left, and your wind calls will be wrong.

2. The 1/4 Turn Focus Trick

Don't just point and shoot. Zoom all the way in on your target, dial your focus knob until the steel is razor-sharp, and then back your zoom out about a 1/4 turn or so. This widens your field of view and sets your depth of field perfectly (on or just inside the target) to catch the wake as it comes in.

3. Look for the "Falling Branch"

If you are staring at the target, you will miss the trace. Bullets arc into the target from above. Look in the empty space above the target. You are looking for a visual disruption in the air that looks like a falling branch. Train your eyes to pick up that branch up high, and follow it down to the steel or the dirt.

When you are shooting long range, stability matters.

I like my Leofoto tripod because it gives me a solid, stable platform without slowing me down. It deploys quickly and is ready to go when I am.
