I met my best friends on a dance floor and I still have them. Raving is so pure sometimes.

Send this to the friend you met dancing.

In July 1518, a woman in Strasbourg stepped into the street and started dancing. She didn’t stop for days. Within a week, more than thirty people had joined her. Within a month, the chronicles say, it was hundreds.

The city’s doctors decided the cure was more dancing. So the council turned the guild halls into dance floors, built stages in the markets, and paid musicians to play.

It made things worse. More people joined in. The council tore the stages down and banned most music and dancing until September.

Last Halloween the Mütter Museum in Philadelphia asked me to turn that story into a four-hour DJ set. On October 30 we do it again: Choreomania. Nobody’s banning the music this time.

Fewer than 100 tickets left. Link in bio.

Send this to the person you’d catch a dancing plague with.

Hi I’m Daniela, and I’ll be introducing myself every so often for the foreseeable forever on here 😆🫡

(Sidebar: Claude suggested making me a sizzle reel and I literally gave it zero direction and… well I think it came out pretty darn good 🤯) by @daniela_starcat

For the women in dance music and nightlife: behind the decks, behind the build, and holding the whole room together.

Send this to a woman who runs the night.

Real raving is so pure. A room full of adults playing, and nobody asking what you do.

Send this to someone who gets it.

Shiva is the system. Shakti is the sound. Her name is Shakti.

In the Shakta and Tantric traditions, Shakti is the force that made the universe and keeps it moving. Shiva is stillness: pure awareness, the container. Shakti is everything that moves through it. There’s an old saying that Shiva without Shakti is a corpse.

I see it every weekend. Shiva is the system. Shakti is the sound. The dance floor is Shiva. The dance is Shakti. A room with no music in it is furniture. Music with no room is noise with nowhere to land. You need both, and every one of us has both.

This is her as Durga, the form the gods called on when a demon showed up that no man could defeat. Right now it’s Navaratri: nine nights when millions of people dance in circles until late, for her. It ends October 19.

That’s why I named my event series Her Name Is Shakti. For me, the divine feminine is the reason a dance floor moves.

Are you the sound system or the sound tonight?
