Editing a scene with a window seat in it. Love a window seat! 😻

Doorways can feel like portals to another world.

When I am writing, I have to keep an eye on how many people are going in and out of doors, as it can be a sign I am starting a scene too early.

But overall, I love the moment of exploring somewhere new.

One of the things I obsess over is what the ground looks like. Tiles? Cobbles? Paving stones? I love them all.

To walk in my characters’ shoes, I have to know *what* they are walking on.

Where is the best place to edit?

All places work for me, but “on a boat” was wonderful. Whenever I looked up to search for the right word, the landscape by the lake had changed. Beautiful! 😻

Limone sul Garda, or “Lemon Land” as the girls called it.

The hilly cobbled streets and lemon products on every corner, including this fine sorbet, were beautiful. We all left sporting lemon-patterned headbands. 😻

Imagine writing on one of these @negozioolivetti typewriters! The colours are simply gorgeous as well.

One of the best parts of editing is weaving in these details. I understand Cormac McCarthy used a powder blue Olivetti Lettura 32, and Sylvia Plath favoured one too.

I am lucky enough to live near @dauntbooks in Hampstead where there are so many treasures waiting to be discovered.

I came away with a copy of These Old Shades (Georgette Heyer) - a re-read - and it kept me up all night reading.

It took three notebooks to write The Venice Sisters. All from @moleskine and I have just discovered they have ones with more pages. So useful! More space for words (this is not an ad).

Do you handwrite your novels? I find it so much easier than typing. The pen skittering over the page unlocks my best ideas.

Place in fiction is hugely important to me, and I love to read books set in the location I am writing about.

Here are a few of my favourites books from the past few weeks:
- Death in Venice - Thomas Mann’s lugubrious take on the city is brilliant and intensely sad. This was a re-read, and well worth picking up again. I may dive in again in a few months. Anyone seen the film? It is on my TBW (if one can have a TBW list as well as a TBR).
- Lord Byron and Venice - to me - go hand in hand. Whenever I write a swimming scene, I think of him and Don Juan.
- When I revisited (hah - so sorry!) the Venice scene in Brideshead, it turned out to only be a few pages, but it made a deep impression on me. In this novel, Evelyn Waugh gives us a masterclass on how to depict places so vividly that they are unforgettable. I learn more each time I read it. Also, Waugh loved a prologue, which I respect.
- The Silver Book is a mesmeric dive into the events leading up to the murder of Pasolini, and Laing captures the watery glory of the city perfectly.
- What is life without a little romance? I bought The Floating Venice Bookshop in Venice, and it ticked all the right boxes. I am still dreaming of owning my very own book barge (complete with cat), although not so much into the rowing.
