My favorite shots from Raya and the Last Dragon

Working on the magic “rain running” was so much fun. I was able to do a lot of key frame animation on individual drops of water to get the performance the director was looking for— not usually something that there’s time for.

And if you think that sounds tedious, you wouldn’t be alone 😂 I’m in the minority of FX animators who love to key frame work, but for me the added whimsy and charm make it all worth it.

Before working on films like The Incredibles 2 and Wish, Daniel gave his all to an early animation assignment—only to have his professor publicly tear it apart and tell him he probably wouldn't get into the animation program.

That same assignment ended up getting 18 million views and paid his rent that year.

There's no better geek revenge story for us. Back in college, we all needed to hear that sometimes our obsessions were justified and our matching Wolrd of War craft tattoos were not a social complete mistake, but a sign of future poor life choices to come. "Late nights and cheap wiiiinnee..."

From "Time Pals: Point and Clickbait", Disney/Pixar animator Daniel Clark takes us behind the scenes of Frozen 2 and reveals what happened when Olaf's death scene was tested with audiences.

According to Daniel, early screenings had kids crying from the moment Olaf disappeared... all the way through the rest of the movie. 😭

When I was working on Moana’s fireoar FX, I came across this gorgeous reference from the Polynesian Cultural Center. These Fireknife performers had all the elements I was looking for— energy, drama, and musicality.

To capture the spirit of the Fireknife, I focused on three things.

1. Fire knows where it’s been and where it’s going. Because fire is about the same weight as air, it leaves trails of where it’s been, but also telegraphs where it’s going to be going next. This is key to getting the fire to feel fluid.

2. Hold the animated shapes longer than you should. We call this “The Disney Pause”. Holding a little longer than you should makes things look lyrical and exaggerated. It keeps the animations appealing and engages the viewer.

3. Use only real life reference from real people. There is so much artificial content on the internet. Often junior artists will bring me references from VFX movies (or worse, generated images). This is like making a copy of a copy. Every iteration gets more messy and inaccurate. Find beautiful reference of real things and study it.
