Sometimes I need a break from the post-hardcore, math rock, and emo… and so I cleanse the palate with a little Fifth Dimension, 80’s cheesey love songs, and French pop Ye-Ye music. IMO these are my “guilty pleasures” and no shade to them, I will proudly crank them… I just may not evangelize them to friends looking for exploring new music (except Laura Nyro, she’s not a guilty pleasures, she is a key influence to a lot of artists). Share yours with me and the community! #80smusic #60smusic #guiltypleasure #thefifthdimension #lauranyro by @danieldecriscio

Grunge… here today, gone tomorrow… but I feel if you a Gen X’er, this short little musical explosion, ushered in by Nirvana’s Nevermind (that changed popular music in the 1990’s like the Beatles in the ‘60’s) likely impacted you in some way, good or bad. But the question is… is grunge really a style or was it just a period of time? Is there certain fingerprints of a grunge sound and if so, where did it come from? That’s what we explore in this brief overview. #grunge #90smusic #genx #aliceinchains #musichistory by @danieldecriscio

Praise the Lord! Don Caballero is back! Just announced October 5 2026 Math Rock pioneers (and fellow Pittsburghers) Don Caballero is planning to return next next summer causing us all to exclaim in ‘27 “June is Finally Here!” These are my favorite Don Cab tunes… one from each record but choosing just one is so tough! #doncaballero #mathrock #drums by @danieldecriscio

Albimi wrote a pitch letter to Nirvana sharing his philosophy and approach to recording them and demanded that he engineer and also mix the record… the unmastered demos scared the crap out of the record company (and to some extent Cobain himself) they brought in Scott Littt to remix the singles and Bob Ludwig to master it in a way that is more radio friendly. In Utero is my favorite Nirvana record and feels like it plays well against the other noise rock Albini recorded/pioneered vs. the popular grunge at the time. #90smusic #nirvana #stevealbini #musichistory #inutero by @danieldecriscio

Like me you probably have fond memories of making a mixtape for a crush or a new friend back in the day. Every one has their own personal take on it as it’s very personal… here’s 5 observations, suggestions I have for that mixtape, playlist! I’d surely have some That Dog, Janes Addiction, The Pixies on mine! So let’s get started! #mixtape #infj #90smusic #crush #janesaddiction by @danieldecriscio

Alternate tunings exploded in the 1990’s. More experimental rock like Sonic Youth (pre-90’s) and My Bloody Valentine used them extensively and so did the heavy stompy rock of Helmet and Rage Against the Machine. I do too and that is especially driven by my love of Slint and Chavez. This is just a brief follow up to my recent videos on the same bands… I do not really get into metal, grunge and other genres that also used them so if you are a fan, sorry! If you are a beginner ferl free to ask for advice… if you are a pro feel free to correct my mistakes and enlighten us all :) #90salternative #alternatetuning #rickbeato #slint #mybloodyvalentine by @danieldecriscio

A very brief history of another one of those controversial genres, Shoegaze! You go from the orchestral wall of sound of The Beach Boys Pet Sounds to the ambient, layered contributions of Brian Eno through Post Punk, No Wave noise, chimey Scottish stylings of The Jesus and Mary Chain, Cocteau Twins and big guitar fuzz of Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr. a very brief peak thst covers My Bloody Valentine (my favorite) as well as Ride, Lush, Chapterhouse etc. Shoegaze evolved over time and in the last 10-15 years we’ve seen a new crop. My favorite band @shinerkc just put out a cover of MBV’s Only Shallow, check it out! I’m no expert, just a fan that loves how genres come to be and Shoegaze’s short, but impactful peak is an interesting review. #shoegaze #90smusic #mybloodyvalentine #musichistory #brianeno by @danieldecriscio

Yes @tacobell was releasing 90’s Alt Rock CD’s alongside Seven Layer Burritos and Mexican Pizzas in the mid 90’s! I still have the CD from my days of eating/working there as a teen. Making me hungry! #tacotuesday #tacobell #90salternative #thesmithereens #90snostalgia by @danieldecriscio

Who got you into good music as a kid? There’s likely a big sister link in your musical chain. Before social media, cool big sisters WERE social media! #sisters #80smusic #emo #90smusic #mtv @julianahatfield by @danieldecriscio

I “mistakenly” saw a band in 1998 that blew my mind. Music and live shows are a powerful thing and we all have some story where we were impacted deeply by a performance or a record. For me that is Baltimore’s Lungfish. #lungfishband #dischordrecords #danielhiggs #zomes #juneof44 by @danieldecriscio

What do I think the musical spirit animal of Slint’s 1991’s Spiderland? A classic prog rock gem Red from King Crimson. In this What the Fudge we VERY BRIEFLY explore the creamy goodness of this seminal record that ushered in the weird and math of the 90’s! #mathrock #spiderland #slint #sonicyouth #kingcrimson by @danieldecriscio

Bob Mould is my guitar hero. I have always loved his playing and sound. It’s not hard to play like Bob but to dial it in you need to think more about creating a wash of sound vs. being cute and precise. @bobmouldmusic @sugarcopperblue #punkguitar #emo #guitarlessons #huskerdu by @danieldecriscio
